  8. Problem Question 5min • You have been asked to evaluate a new prosthesis for Paralympic basketball players using a curved piece of carbon fiber for the lower leg . Model this as a hollow cylinder and in pairs think about whether this is suitable for the job a length of lower leg R, Curvature, when bent. Information: E = 70 GPa (typical carbon fiber) R = 6.3m (1 deg. Curvature for a 1 meter long lower leg) rout = 1cm rinner = 0.5cm Average mass of player = 70kg rout rinner Cross- section Hint: Think about energy required for jumping in basketball

  9. One Minute Paper • Individually you have 1 minute to write down what you think of the design we have just seen. • Include the results of any calculations you did, any changes you would make to the design and anything else you might see as relevant to the designer

  10. Rubric for Paper • Using conservation of energy and gravitational potential energy. If a = 0.5m then h = 0.005m or 5mm! • Definitely not enough energy for jumping around in basketball • This neglects energy stored in other muscles such as the thighs • Could increase this by increasing E or rout • No mention of design for a foot, ankle or knee, or a method of attachment to player • Would be unstable with just the cross-section of r=1cm • Other well-reasoned and relevant comments
