  1. Alliteration & Repetition Poetry 101

  2. Alliteration • The repetition of the same letter or sound at the beginning of words. • Example 1: • She sells sea shells by the sea shore. • Example 2: • Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.

  3. Betty Botter Bought Some Butter Betty Botter bought some butter, But, she said, the butter's bitter; If I put it in my batter, It will make my batter bitter. But, a bit of better butter, Will make my batter better. So, she bought a bit of butter, Better than her bitter butter, And she put it in her batter, And the batter was not bitter. So, 'twas better Betty Botter, Bought a bit of better butter.

  4. Repetition • The action of repeating sounds, words, phrases, lines, or stanzas that have already been said or written • Used to emphasize a point or an emotion “The woods are lovely, dark and deep. But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.” -Robert Frost What point do you think Robert Frost is trying to make by repeating the last line of the poem twice?
