  1. Wig Wig Where I Go Who I Got By Les Greenberg & Garry Abezetian

  2. Get to the game site early • What’s early? What’s acceptable? • Is there a parking place for us • Who is our game contact • Varsity guys maybe watch some of the soph game and get in football mode • What’s different when you have a doubleheader?

  3. Go on the field together

  4. R and U • Talk to the coaches • Find out special plays • Kick out of bounds do you want it on the 35 unless you tell me different • Is place kicker R or L footed? • Ball Boys, who are they and will they run ball to the umpire • Extra points ball in the middle unless you tell me different • Halftime…. Pregame… what happens?

  5. H and L •  Walk and check the playing field • Check the line to gain equipment • I bring tape for the 5yd mark  (thanks Dave Kraft) •  I also bring instructions for the chain crew from NFHS website

  6. BJ • Go to the press box • Talk to the timer and announcer • Provide them crew names (Helpful to spell names phonetically) and a referee signal sheet. • Bring them the timer instruction sheet

  7. The Crew • All members of the crew when done with those duties watch warm ups • Stand together for National Anthem

  8. Standard Free kicks

  9. Where I go • U   R's 20 yard line press box side • H   R's 30 yard line opposite press box • BJ K’s restraining line on H side of field • LJ R’s restraining line on U side of field • R around the 5 to goal line shaded on H side of field

  10. Who I got • BJ/LJ Watch for encroachment (but use common sense) • BJ/LJ flows down field about 10-15 yards. Watches blocking by R on his side • has forward progress when runner is in his coverage area • Has K's goal line

  11. Who I got • H/U has out of bounds kick coverage • Blocking and forward progress in their zone • Referee has receiver’s goal line and ball carrier in his area • The official near first touching by receivers winds clock • Everybody has to watch players after the play to clean up

  12. Scrimmage Plays

  13. Where I go • Starting position • R) 10-12 yards behind QB on passing arm side • U) 5-8 yards off the LOS making sure he can see the ball • H&LJ) On LOS off the field of play • * Added note when ever a snap is from the 5-yard line and in the wings must get to the goal line and officiate back to the ball • B) 15-20 yards off the ball fading to the strong side and deeper than the deepest DB

  14. Who I got • R) Count "A" players, watch for illegal snaps, shifts and false starts • U) Count "A" players, check for 5 players numbered 50-79, illegal snap and false starts • H&LJ) LJ count "B" players. Both find your keys • Watch your side of LOS for infractions • Both have the snapper (fish in your own pond) • Make sure there are 7 on the LOS. Illegal motion • B) Count "B" players. 25 second count

  15. Run plays

  16. Who I Got • R) QB watch the hand off to the back • U) Interior line players • H&LJ) Forward progress in your side of the field. Illegal acts in you area. When the run is on the other side of the field watch players not in on the play • B) Watching perimeter for late hits and piling on fouls

  17. Where I Go • R) Follow up behind the runner • U) To the numbers. When the half is ending and the offense is in hurry up go sideline to sideline • H&LJ) you got 100 yards of sideline • B) Clean up on sideline plays

  18. Passing Plays

  19. Where I Go • R) Follow the QB (but not to close) • U) Step up to the LOS after you read pass • H&LJ) Flow down field about 5-8 yards to start. Break down field on a long pass • B) Setup about 20 yards from LOS, fade to strong side if balanced LJ side is strong

  20. Who I Got • R) QB (protect him) one of the tackles discuss with the U which one • U) All the linemen except the one tackle the "R" has (All 5 on my crew, sorry Garry) • H&LJ) you have the widest player if unbalanced, if balanced strong side is LJ side. Have to watch the flats on your side of the field • B) Has the tight end at the snap • B, H&LJ) after initial reads transition to zone coverage

  21. Scrimmage Kicks non-scoring

  22. Where I Go • R) Be on the LJ side of field about 5-7 yards deep a couple steps in front of kicker. You got the goal line on a kick return • U) About 7-10 yards deep • H) Hold LOS until kick crosses line, then move down field • LJ) at snap move down field • B) Position your self about 5 yards in front of the deepest receiver on the "H: side of the field

  23. Who I Got • R) Protect the kicker. Line up either the "H" or "LJ" on a kick in flight out of bounds • U) LOS blocking. After kick crosses NZ watch down field blocking • H) Coverage of short and out of bounds kicks on your side of field • LJ) Ball carrier on your side of field. First touching on your side • H&LJ) forward progress on your side of the field • B) Deep receivers, Fair catch signals, first touching. Momentum exception inside the 5-yard line

  24. Scoring Kicks

  25. Where I Go • R) Line up about 1yard behind kicker and 2-3 yards to the side of kicker looking into the holder • U) 5-7 deep off LOS • H&LJ) whichever side the "R" is on that wing goes under the goal post. If the snap outside the 20-yard line holds the LOS and "B" has both uprights • B) Under goal post opposite the wing

  26. Who I Got • R) Kicker and holder. On a bad snap be ready if to rule if holder is still legal to keep play alive • U) Snapper (legal snap and roughing the snapper). Number exceptions. Watch line play for holding on "K" or "R" ("R" might grab lineman to make a hold for team mate)

  27. Who I Got • H&LJ) whichever one is on LOS encroachment/false starts. 7 "K" players on LOS. Goal line on busted play. Other wing has upright and on a busted play carefully move on angle to goal line • B) Upright and cross bar. On busted play got end line. Blow whistle when ball crosses goal line

  28. Measurement • R) Look pretty and rule if line to gain was made or not • U&B) one has the ball and the other has the front stake • LJ) align "H" up with the ball • H) Bring out the chains keeping a hold on the clip

  29. Other game administration duties for crew • Don't take a down off or time between downs • Is the down box right? • Is the penalty enforcement correct? • After the 1st and 3rd Qtr.is the ball and chains correct? • Is each team playing with 11? • Was the last substitution legal? • Clock winding down !!!!! • Everybody's responsible for the above!!!!!!
