  1. MAXILLARY ARTERY

  2. Internal maxillary artery. • Larger terminal branch of external carotid artery. • Arises within substance of parotid. • Has 3 parts: • 1st or mandibular part. • 2ndor pterygoid part. • 3rd or pterygopalatine part

  3. BRANCHES • 1ST PART: • Deep auricular. • Anterior tympanic. • Middle meningeal. • Accessory meningeal. • Inferior alveolar • Accompany branches of mandibular nerve. • Passes through the foramina.

  4. BRANCHES • 2ND PART: • Deep temporal • Masseteric • Pterygoid • Buccal • All branches are muscular. • They do not pass through any foramina.

  5. BRANCHES • 3RD PART: • Posterior superior alveolar • Infra-orbital • Greater palatine • Pharyngeal • Artery of pterygoid canal • Sphenopalatine sph ph apc io psa psa gp

  6. MAXILLARY NERVE

  7. PTERYGOPALATINE FOSSA

  8. CONNECTIONS

  9. 2nd division of trigeminal nerve. • Entirely sensory. • Course

  10. ZB MB PSA BRANCHES • In middle cranial fossa. • Meningeal branch. • In pterygopalatine fossa. • Ganglionic. • Zygomatic nerve. • Posterior superior alveolar (dental) GB

  11. MSA BRANCHES • In infraorbital canal. • Middle superior alveolar. • Anterior superior alveolar. • On the face. • Palpebral. • Nasal. • Superior labial. ASA

  12. PTERYGOPALATINE GANGLION

  13. Largest peripheral ganglion of parasympathetic system. • Present in pterygopalatine fossa. • Topographically related to maxillary nerve, functionally with greater petrosal branch of facial nerve.

  14. CONNECTIONS • Parasympathetic or motor root: secretomotor to lacrimal, nasal, palatine & pharyngeal glands. • Sympathetic root: vasomotor to mucous membrane of nose, palate & nasopharynx. • Sensory root: passes without interruption

  15. BRANCHES • FOUR SETS. • Orbital. • Palatine. • Nasal. • Pharyngeal.

  16. APPLIED ANATOMY • Ganglion of hay fever
