  1. The Church as Family • Today: What is the Church? • August 11th: The Church as Community: (Jon) • 18th: …. as a Missional Community (Carolyn) • 25th: ….. as a Caring Community (Simon) • September 1st: The Broader Church (Jon)

  2. What is the Church?- through the eyes of its earliest members Acts 2:36-47 Why did the new believers join the Church? What was it they joined? What did it involve for them

  3. Why did they join? • Strength in numbers • Growing and maturing ‘They devoted themselves to the Apostles’ teaching…’ (Acts 2: 42) “The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments, 16 for, ‘Who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?’ But we have the mind of Christ.” 1 Cor: 2: 15-16

  4. What did they Join? Article 19 of the Articles of Religion: The church ‘The visible church of Christ is a congregation of believers in which the pure Word of God is preached and in which the sacraments are rightly administered according to Christ's command in all those matters that are necessary for proper administration. As the churches of Jerusalem, Antioch and Alexandria have erred, so also the church of Rome has erred, not only in their practice and forms of worship but also in matters of faith.’

  5. So the Church is…. • A ‘Congregation;’ a gathering; an ‘Ekklesia’ (Hebrews 10:25) • A gathering of ‘believers’ • The ‘pure word of God’ is preached (Titus 1:9) • Sacraments of Communion and Baptism practised • Discipline! (Heb. 12;10, Acts 5 and 1 Cor. 5)

  6. Action Stations! • take the next step • grow as a disciple • develop the Mind of Christ
