  4. Hawaii is a state in America. It is made up of hundreds of small islands. There are eight main islands. Hawaii

  6. This is the state flag of Hawaii. The eight red, white and blue stripes stand for the eight main islands of Hawaii. The Union Jack in the top left corner represents Hawaii’s long relationship with the British government.

  7. Barack Obama was born in Honolulu, the state capital of Hawaii, on 4 August 1961.

  8. There are really only two seasons in Hawaii: Summer (from May to October); and Winter (from November to April). There is sometimes a lot of rain in the winter, but the temperature is still quite hot!!

  9. lei To make your own lei: Cut out flower shapes using card, tissue paper or crepe paper. Punch a hole in the centre of each flower shape. Cut drinking straws into short lengths. Thread the flowers and the straws onto a piece of string long enough to fit over a person’s head. Tie the string at both ends to make a necklace. Be as creative as you wish. Use lots of bright colours!! A lei is a garland of flowers which is worn around the neck. It is given to someone as a sign of affection or just to say 'aloha!'

  10. Grass skirts are worn in Hawaii when they do their traditional Hula dancing! grass skirt To make your own grass skirt: Take a large piece of construction paper (any colour!). Cut strips starting at the bottom, but do not cut all the way to the top. Fold over the top of the paper to make it stronger. Use velcro to join the skirt together.

  11. Why not have a Hawaiian party and wear your lei and grass skirt?! In Hawaii this would be called a LUAU!

  12. Here are some games you could play at your party: Limbo dancing Who can go under the lowest bar? Shell search Hide some shells in a sand tray. Give each child a bucket. Whoever collects the most shells is the winner! Hula hoop competition Who can spin the hoop the longest? Fish, fish, shark! Play the game ‘Duck, duck, goose’ but change the words! Musical beach towels Play the game with beach towels instead of chairs!
