  9. Frequently Asked Questions What is the GES? When was it created? Why? • Georgia’s Education Scoreboard, conceived by Governor Perdue and developed by GOSA in 2008, provides education stakeholders with a straightforward indication of student achievement in Georgia, from pre-kindergarten through postsecondary education. To date, there has not been a sole source available to education stakeholders that concisely reports the quality of Georgia’s education system. Instead, stakeholders have been forced to visit multiple sites to piece together an understanding of the system. The Education Scoreboard will fill this gap and report the “bottom line” of education in Georgia What about GOSA’s report card? • GOSA will continue to publish its report card, which is intended to give users a much more comprehensive understanding of all data reported by Georgia’s schools. Is this an effort to show education in a biased manner in Georgia? • The Education Scoreboard is not intended to make Georgia education look strong or weak; instead, it represents important areas that forthrightly show levels of achievement in Georgia. It was developed with support from Georgia’s education agencies as well as state and national non-partisan education experts.

  10. Frequently Asked Questions Do other states have an Education Scoreboard? • Georgia is the first state to publish this type of Scoreboard. However, the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) has developed a Scoreboard that reports only high-level data common to all 16 SREB states. It does not delve deeply into Georgia-specific data. Is there a hard copy available for users? • Unfortunately, GOSA is not able to provide a hard copy of the Scoreboard for distribution due to the extensiveness of the data it reports. It is and will remain solely an electronic resource for stakeholders. However, GOSA is always happy to serve the needs of those without internet access by printing and mailing specific reports by request. Is technical assistance available to help users navigate the Scoreboard? • Yes, technical assistance will be available to users in the near future. An electronic tutorial will be hosted on GOSA’s website, and GOSA’s communications staff is happy to provide personal assistance to groups as needed. Simply call 404-463-1160 or send an email to GOSA@gov.state.ga.us with a description of tutorial need.

  11. Frequently Asked Questions Why wasn’t a Scoreboard built for pre-kindergarten? • GOSA intends to add a Scoreboard for Georgia’s Pre-K program when more evaluation data is available for the program. Please check back frequently for more information. Will GOSA be adding additional features to the Scoreboard? • Yes, GOSA intends to add functionality to the Scoreboard in the coming months. Enhancements may allow users to compare individual schools against each other in selected areas. In addition, GOSA plans to survey businesses to rate specific skills of degreed and non-degreed workers entering their workforce. Data collected from the surveys will be added to the Scoreboard. How does the GES align with Governor Perdue’s education priorities? • The GES aligns perfectly with Governor Perdue’s education priorities. The Governor focuses on initiatives with potential to improve student achievement, raise SAT scores, lower dropout rates, and consistently grow students’ skills in reading, writing, and math. By straightforwardly and transparently communicating Georgia’s status and progress in these areas, the GES plays an important role in helping to raise academic achievement in Georgia, from pre-kindergarten through college.
