As per an InterNations Expat City Ranking in 2017, New York was ranked as one of the ten cities in the world where foreigners feel welcome, with almost 86% of the expat community expressing that the local culture is extremely friendly to get used to. The unquestionable dominance of the city in making expats feel at home remains to date. The only negative features were the high cost of living and the sky-rocketing housing market of NYC.

  2. This brings us to the topic for the day – if living in the city center is so difficult, where do most of the expats in NYC prefer to reside? Expats moving to the USA, especially to NYC, need to make housing arrangements and find the right schools for their kids, etc., before relocating. Outside the New York City boroughs are few suburbs where the expat community settles down – New Jersey, Connecticut, and Westchester County. A few of the most popular neighborhoods surrounding Manhattan are: •Rye in NY in Westchester County, where Asian and European expats love to reside. •Scarsdale in NY in Westchester County is another popular area where you can find many expats, especially from Japan and Germany. •Westport in Connecticut, home to the Westport Country Playhouse, is another favorite spot for expats, especially because of the Longshore Municipal Golf Course. •Greenwich is an affluent city and home to several financial and hedge fund services firms. The town is about forty minutes by the subway from Manhattan via the Metro-North express train ride. •Ridgewood is located in Northern New Jersey and offers a safe haven for many expats in NYC. The place boasts of some of the best schools in the area, surrounded by the most diverse community. The downtown area is one of the most popular sites here for expat residents.
