  1. Title: Spread of Buddhism in India, Ceylon and Central Asia • Do Now: • On this day in 1454, explorer Amerigo Vespucci was born. The continent we live on is named after Vespucci. What part of the world would you like to sail to and explore? Why did you choose this destination?

  2. Agenda • Do Now • Spread of Buddhism Lesson • Finish Mandala • Complete Venn Diagram

  3. Objective • Students will finish creating their Mandala to show steps to achieving their goals. The Mandala must have 12 pictures on it.

  4. Vocabulary • Missionary: a person who goes to another place to teach about his or her religion • Virtue: good quality • Compassion: loving concern for others • Bodhisattvas: enlightened ones who return to earth after death to help others

  5. Spread of Buddhism • Buddhism values love, wisdom, goodness, calm, and self-control. Buddhists believe that The Buddha and his teachings should be honored, that people should try to end suffering, that they should follow the Eightfold Path • Today, Buddhism is a major world religion. There are over 300 million Buddhists in the world.

  6. Buddhist Monasteries • As the Buddha preached, he gained many followers • For a while they followed him from place to place • As the numbers grew, the Buddha found places for his followers to rest during the rainy season…this was the beginning of monasteries

  7. Buddhist Monasteries • Women soon joined Buddhist monasteries as well and were called nuns. • Buddha’s aunt and other family members including his wife and son also joined

  8. Buddhist Monasteries • Buddha set up rules for monks and nuns to live by. • Their duties were to meditate and to spread the Buddha’s teachings • Monasteries became important centers of learning.

  9. Buddhist Texts • Buddhism does not have on sacred text • For hundreds of years, the Buddha’s followers memorized his teachings • The first scripture were not written down until 43 B.C. • Some describe Buddha’s stories about his life • Others include the Buddha’s teachings, his rules for monks and nuns and other statements.

  10. Buddhist Texts • The most popular texts are the Jataka tales • These tales tell about 547 previous lives of the Buddha before he achieved enlightenment. • In some, the Buddha is a human being, in the rest he is an animal or plant • They also teach Buddhist ideas and values.

  11. The Growth of Buddhism • Before Buddha’s death, he urged his followers to spread his teachings to all corners of the earth • “Go forth for the gain of many, for the welfare of many, in compassion for the world. Preach the glorious doctrine. Proclaim the life of holiness.”

  12. Buddhist Missionaries • Missionaries carried out Buddha’s teachings after he died. • The son of a famous Indian ruler (Asoka), took the teachings to Ceylon • Others monks took it to Southeast Asia • Others took it to the north following trade routs • Over time the religious teachers called lamas gained much influence.

  13. Two Schools of Buddhism • The two schools share the same beliefs but they interpret Buddha’s life and teachings in a different way. • Theravada Buddhism • They believe that wisdom was Buddha’s greatest virtue. They also think the most important aspect of Buddha’s life was enlightenment and nirvana. Most followers spend time in a monastery • Mahayana Buddhism • They believe the most important part of Buddha’s life was his decision not to remain in nirvana. They also believe that their are othesr who made the same choice

  14. The Decline of Buddhism • While Buddhism spread throughout the world, it almost died in India • This was due partly to wars but the most important factor was that Hinduism absorbed many of the Buddha’s teachings • Many Hindus came to believe that the god Vishnu came to earth as Buddha to help people overcome suffering

  15. Legacy of Buddhism • Today, about 360 million people call themselves Buddhists • 1 of every 8 people practice Buddhism • That’s a lot of people!

  16. Moral Teachings • The moral teachings of Buddhism appeal to Buddhists and people of other faiths • Many appreciate Buddhist teachings of respect for all living things and compassion for others.

  17. Literature and Arts • Buddhism left the world with many religious writings as well as the Jataka tales • It also inspired the building of temples and monasteries • Buddhist artists have decorated temples with colorful scenes from the life of Buddha • In some countries today, Buddhist statues and temples are viewed as national treasures.

  18. Buddhism Individual Practice • Similar to what we did on Monday, you are going to get your interactive notebooks. • You need to choose 2 sections to do from Buddhism: • Choose whichever topic you feel the LEAST comfortable with. This is a great way to get the information you may be struggling with • Development of Buddhism (p. 94-95) • Beliefs of Buddhism (p. 97-98) • Spread of Buddhism (p. 100-101)

  19. Mandala Project • You will have the rest of the day to complete your Mandala • This is an individual project so you will be working alone. • Let’s review the rubric we created as a class so you know confidently what it will take to get a “5” • These types of exercises may be helpful to you when you are preparing for a big test, about to interview for a job…anytime you need to focus for a goal. • The outside pictures also help you to realize what it will take to achieve that goal!

  20. Early Finisher • Begin constructing a G.R.A.P.E.S sheet in your notebook. We will do one as a class so you’re input will be essential. • This will also be a good tool to build on and to study off of in preparation for your test!

  21. Complete the Venn Diagram Hinduism • We are now going to fill in the other half of the Venn diagram with what we know about Buddhism: • Please flip back to the page where we first worked on it.
