  1. A Vegan’s Social Contract Ms. Carniaux

  2. Who is the audience? ビーガンと草食動物 • Vegans/herbivores What is the goal? • The purpose of this social contract is to protect and preserve a humane quality of life for animals. This social contract also seeks to encourage its audience (i.e., vegans/herbivores) to support local farms.

  3. Who will benefit? • Vegans, herbivores, and animals What will be protected? • Animals, our health, local farms Who will be disenfranchised or not supported? • Omnivores, carnivores, anyone who benefits from killing animals and/or treating animals with hormones and chemicals

  4. 1. Be kind to all living creatures. • Treat every animal you encounter with love and respect. • Animals feel too.

  5. 2. Serve the species you use. • The species you use takes care of you in many ways (e.g., food, clothing, medicine, labor). Take care of the species you use too. • Healthy animals result in healthy people, a healthy economy, and a healthy farming industry.

  6. 3. Pursue a healthy lifestyle.PhysicallyPsychologically Spiritually • Veganism is a heart-healthy, plant-based diet with obvious physical benefits. • We must do more to make sure that we are psychologically and spiritually at peace.

  7. 4. Do not consume the milk of animals. • We are the only animals that consume milk past infancy. • Moreover, we are the only animal that drinks another animal’s milk.

  8. 5. Do not eat the flesh or eggs of an animal. • Animals are treated with many chemicals and hormones. We ingest these poisons when we eat these animals/eggs. • Animals are often treated cruelly in the stages leading up to their slaughter. Eating these animals supports and encourages animal cruelty.

  9. 6. Support your local farmers. • When we buy locally, we support our local businesses and farmers which helps the economy. •

  10. 7. Read your food labels. If you aren’t sure what an ingredient is, look it up or call the company. • Animal products are slipped into our foods. Foods that you would never suspect would contain animal products often do. It is important to never make assumptions. Be inquisitive and find out more.

  11. 8. Respectfully encourage others to eat vegan. • Share a healthy vegan meal. Show others that vegetables and dairy alternatives are delicious. Lead by example.

  12. 9. Respect everyone’s dietary preferences/restrictions. • Although everyone wants to convince everyone else that his or her opinion or choice is best, it is still important to respect the opinions and choices of others. • Disagreement is not always negative. It demonstrates that there exists competing ideas.

  13. 10. Do not expect everyone to cater to your diet.Be prepared to fend! • Because veganism is not wholly understood by many, it is important to never rely on others for meals or snacks. Come prepared for yourself and others.

  14. Role of the Government 政府の役割 • Every individual in the vegan society is bound to this social contract. The individual is necessary to the success of this society; however, the government also should play a role in the vegan society. Government funding to support healthy eating initiatives and to keep local farms running remain necessities. Moreover, the government should crack down on farms guilty of pumping animals with chemicals and hormones. Our fast-paced, carnivorous civilization is ruining mankind. True to Rousseauean theory, the government must be “responsive and aligned with the general will” (Hobbes, Locke and Rousseau Comparison Grid, 1).

  15. What is the “general will,” you ask? • Though some may argue that Rousseau’s general will is the will of the majority, that carnivores are the majority and that, therefore, the will of carnivore’s represents the general will, I argue that civilization has conditioned the carnivore to accept animal abuse and the injection of hormones and chemicals as necessities. Before this conditioning, veganism did not need to exist because we were not mistreating animals or treating our animals with artificial chemicals. Veganism is a call to the people and to the government to recall it’s long lost “general will” and to rethink the people’s relationship with one of its greatest resources.
