  3. Language Centre • Independent unit of the university. • Courses in Language for Specific Purposes and optional courses in general language. • NB! Turku School of Economics has its own Unit for Languages and Business Communication which provides language studies for their students.

Language Centre • Situated in manydifferentbuildings: • Juslenia (Henrikinkatu 2): Language Centre office (open 10-12, 13-15), administration, classrooms, languagelabs, self-studyroom, teachers’ offices. • Rosetta: classroomRosetta II • Language LabKnalli in Natural Sciences Building I on the hill. • Teachingallaround the campus.

Obligatory language studies • Master’sprogramshavedifferingrequirements. • Moststudentsarerequired to complete a Finnish for ForeigersBeginners’ Course (usuallyintensivecourse, 5 credits). • Somearealsorequired to take an EnglishAcademicWritingSkills Course. • Pleasecheck the languagestudyrequirements of yourstudyprogramfromyourprogramcoordinator. • Moreinformationcanbefound at: • https://nettiopsu.utu.fi/opas/ (CurriculaGuides) • https://intranet.utu.fi/en/units/languagecentre/

Language studies • Courses in followinglanguagesareoffered at the Language Centre: Chinese, English, Finnish for Foreigners, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish • Different levels: beginners, continuation and more advanced special courses. • Mostcoursestaught in Finnish on the beginners’ level.

German, French). • Chinese and Japanesecoursesaretaught in English. • Englishcourses: • Signup in Nettiopsu (utu user ID and passwordneeded). • Thosedegreestudents, whoneedEnglish as an obligatorypart of theirstudies, havepriority

  10. How to enrol for language courses • Enrolmentproceduresvarydepending on the course. • For mostcourses, enrolmentwilltakeplace in the virtualstudyregisterNettiopsu. • NB! A UTU useraccountand e-mail passwordwillbeneeded in order to log in Nettiopsu. Make sure thatyoureceivethem as soon as possible (from the IT Services).

KIFF0001 FinnishBeginners’ Course I (autumn and spring) enrolment in Nettiopsu(DL 4.9.) • KIFF0003 Finnish Intensive Beginners' Course: • Autumn: enrolment through the program coordinator • Spring: enrolment in Nettiopsu • KIEN2024 EnglishAcademicWritingSkills: enrolmentthrough the coordinators. • Therearealsoseveralcourseswhere no enrolment is neededbeforehand (usuallymoreadvancedcourses). • Pleasesee the informationundereachcourse. Ifinformation is onlygiven in Finnish, itusuallymeansthatFinnishskillsarerequired in order to beable to participate in the course.

Language studymodules • Finnish for Foreigners study module (min. 20 ECTS) • Build a studymodule of Finnishcourses. • A completestudymodulewillappear in the degreediploma → usefulwhenseekingwork. • Studymodulesavailablealso in otherlanguages, eg.   14. Wanted: Language Tutors • Language Centre is looking for students to work as languagetutors • Language tutorswork in our language courses: Tellabouttheir home country and culture, help with pronunciation, conversationpractice etc. • Languagesneeded: German, Spanish, Russian

  15. Language tutors • Characteristicsrequired: • Nativespeaker • Punctual, not absent-minded • Motivated • Carrying voice • Good and clear pronunciation • Ability to speak slowly • Preferably a teacherstudent (notobligatory)

  16. How to apply? • German: send a motivationletter to sylyli@utu.fibySept. 4th • Russian: send an e-mail to birgitta.tjurin@utu.fibySept. 10th • Spanish: send a motivationletter to tilesa@utu.fibySept. 9th.

Language Circles • Voluntary meetings where you can get acquainted with both Finnish and international students using your own language or Finnish or some other language. • You will learn more about other people and their culture and also inform others about your own culture. • The groupsspendfreetimetogether: • Cook, play games, seemovies, etc.
