Not because they were in a car accident, Not because they were gunned down, Not because their time had come, not even because they weren’t in the hospital, but simply because they couldn’t obtain a transplant in time. 15 people will die because the organ transplant they need will not be possible. ORGAN TRANSPLANTATION • Organ transplantation is one of the greatest achievements of modern surgery. • It is not longer an experiment. • 21,000 transplants /year (UNOS). • 96,000 waiting.
BIG PROBLEM • The lack of available organs is still a problem of the field of organ transplantation surgery. • In order to continue organ transplant surgery, organ donations must become more available.
THING OF THE TIME • Every 16 minutes, another name is added to the waiting list. • The average wait for a kidney is 416 days, 28 days for a liver, and 162 days for a heart. • (Coalition on Donation website)

AVAILABLE ORGAN • Clinics consider blood type, body size, medical urgency, time waiting, and geographical proximity as the criteria for distribution. • Factors such as race, gender, age, income, or celebrity status are never considered. • Organ allocation.
HOW TO BECOME A DONOR • Step 1. Sign Your Driver's License or Non-Driver ID. • Step 2. Enroll in the New York State Organ and Tissue Donor Registry. • Step 3. Discuss your decision with your family
BRENT’S STORY (Donor) • Brent Adams died on April 13, 1998 due to a car accident. • He was such a fighter and loved life. • Brent’s organs helped five people.
TONG’S STORY (Recipient) • Tong had a serious congenital heart disease. • She got a heart in Oct, 2000. • She is totally different after her transplant. Her lips, fingers and toes are pink.
