  1. Specific Mathematics Assessments that Reveal Thinking Vicki Steinle Kaye Stacey, Beth Price, Helen Chick, Eugene Gvozdenko University of Melbourne Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, Victoria Australian Research Council

  2. SMART tests SMART tests are Very short Very focussed Online, so any time, any place Computer marked Based on mathematics education research After students complete smart tests Immediatefeedback to teachers on students’ understanding Teaching advice is provided

  3. When to use a SMART test In general, SMART tests are used before you start a topic, to inform your teaching of that topic. assessment for learning/teaching rather than assessment of learning

  4. How to use the SMART tests system

  5. To read more about the SMART system: • go to this page: http://www.smartvic.com • and use the link click here to read further information

  6. To choose a quiz and sign up: • go to this page: http://www.smartvic.com • and use the link click here to select a smart-test for your students.

  8. LOGIN page • You can now access the smart system from the teacher page of the smart test website www.smartvic.com • Read information • Log in using: • your email address as your username • the password you were sent by email after you signed up. • Note that if you have forgotten your password you can click on the link below the password box and it will be emailed to you.

  9. After you logged in, click on the tab “Quiz index” to see the list of available quizzes. The quiz that you have selected on sign up will have a green indicator

  10. You can preview a quiz or even submit it to get a diagnosis, an explanation and teaching advice Click on this button to see the quiz and teacher advice Click on this button to make quiz available to students

  11. After you choose a quiz, the student test code appears. This is also emailed to you. If you want students to use the quiz soon, leave the availability for students on ‘YES’ (a green dot in your index). Otherwise, ‘NO’ (an amber dot in your index). Green – ready to go Amber – on standby

  12. Tips and suggestions • Do you want your students to do one quiz or a few? • Select the quiz(zes) and ‘make available’ to students. • You need to give students the web address www.smartvic.com/school and the student test code(s). • Decide if you want students to complete the quizzes at home or at school or elsewhere (e.g. library).

  13. Tips and suggestions • If you need to book a computer room at school for testing, plan ahead and set up several quizzes for students to do in that session. • Note that students will need to log on and use a separate student test code for each quiz. • Ask students to type their class name before their last initial (or identifier) when they log in (so that when you download results you will be able to sort them by class).

  14. Accessing results…1 In the MY QUIZ ACCESS DETAILS box, click on see results here or see results in a new window

  15. Accessing results…2 A list of students who have completed the quiz is given, along with the ‘diagnosis’ for each. The % of questions attempted is also provided for each student as sometimes an incomplete quiz is the reason for “under performance”.

  16. Interpreting results…1 At the top of the information for teachers is an index with links to the sections.

  17. Interpreting results…2 There is a brief explanation of each diagnosis

  18. Interpreting results…3 There is more detailed information about each diagnosis

  19. Interpreting results…4 Suggestions for teaching- sometimes linked to the specific diagnosis

  20. Interpreting results…5 What are ‘stages’ and ‘misconceptions’?

  21. Interpreting results…6 ‘Stages’ refer to the level of development of the student’s understanding. Most (but not all) students go through similar stages as they seek to make sense of new concepts.

  22. Interpreting results…7 A ‘misconception’ is a partial or incorrect understanding, which leads to predictable errors. This is not the same as a careless error.

  23. Saving results…1 • You can access them at any time from the quiz index. • You can download them as an Excel spreadsheet.

  24. Share your experience We hope that the SMART test canary will shed some light for you on the understanding of your students. We are looking forward to get feedback from you. Together we can make the system even better. If you need help, use the ‘Contact us’ tab from your teacher page to contact the help desk.
