  2. Musty • Having an odor or flavor of mold, as old buildings, having-closed rooms, or stale food. • If you smell a musty odor in your room, it means your room smell very old and bad.

  4. Clapstick • Clapsticks or clappers are a type of drumstick

  5. Shiver • A person or animal shaking uncontrollably as a result of being cold, frightened, or excited.

  6. Soldado • Soldier: someone who serves in the army

  7. Marshes or wetlands • An area of wet, low land. • The link between land and water

  8. Rabbit-skin blanket • Used for keeping people warm

  9. Chief • The leader of a group of people or clan

  10. Traders • A person who buys and sells good, currency, or stocks

  12. Chapter 1 • 1. Why were the Yokuts hiding? • 2. What do you think might have happened if the man who entered the cave was a soldado? • 3. Sometimes the Youts used signal fires to warn each other of danger. What do we use today to warn others of danger? • 4. How did Pasquala’s feelings change from the beginning of the chapter to the end? Give examples.

  13. Chapter 1 answers • 1. Smoke signals warned them that strangers had entered their valley • 2. The Native Americans would have been questioned and the soldados would have searched the village for runaway Indians from the missions. • 3. To warn others of danger, we use signs, sirens, foghorns, and flags, etc. • 4. Pasquala was frightened as she sat in the cave. She sat quietly and turned her face to the cave wall. At the end of the chapter, she was happy with her family and the tribe.
