  1. The Muscular System Mr. P. Leighton GCSE PE Theory

  2. Today’s Session… • All of you: Will understand the importance of the muscular system, taking into account the key terms of VOLUNTARY, INVOLUNTARY and CARDIAC MUSCLES. • Most of you: Will understand the key terms above whilst also understanding the principle of ANTAGONISTIC PAIRS. • Some of you: Will begin the work on what the muscles actually do in class (finish for HW)

  3. TASK: • On the board are 11 names of muscles. • Decide on a “Dummy” from your group to be used in the presentation. • It is the rest of the groups job to decide where these muscles are situated and label them correctly. • You have 7 mins for this task- when you are finished take a picture of the dummy to show they are correct!

  4. How did you do?

  5. So how do muscles work? Muscles work in 3 ways… • Voluntary- You choose to make it move… • Involuntary- works without thought- blinking? • Cardiac: The Heart- most important muscle…

  6. How do muscles move? • Muscles are attached to bones by tendons. • Muscles cannot push- this is why they must work in pairs. • Muscles must work in ANTAGONISTIC PAIRS to allow successful movement. • The muscle shortening is the AGONIST (Agony) • The muscle lengthening is the ANTAGONIST (making it get shorter) • Which muscles are working here?

  7. Work for you… • Spend the rest of the time looking at pg. 140-142. • I would like you to have notes on all the 11 key muscles for this time next week. • The use of GCSE Bitesize or my wordpress site (www.soculleighton.wordpress.com/gcse) can help with this. • Any Questions?
