  1. The Secret to Real Student Engagement Robyn Jackson @robyn_mindsteps Allison Zmuda @compclass #ascd14; #realengagement

  2. The Biggest Mistake We Make Engagement is not compliance.

  3. Real Engagement is NOTCompliance#realengagement

  4. The Biggest Reality We Sometimes Overlook Learning is a voluntary endeavor. How do we make it so more students are willing to volunteer?

  5. Why real engagement is so critical • Psychological investment — working hard to “make sense” of problem, text, project or challenge • More receptive to feedback and more likely to revise • Take pride and ownership in the work produced • Increased likelihood that learning will stick

  6. 4 Keys to Engagement Quiet questions in the mind of every student… • Clarity: What am I aiming for? • Context: Why should I care? • Culture: Who is invested in my success? • Challenge: How is it working for me?

  7. Key #1 CLARITY From a teacher’s point of view… What am I asking students to do? From a student’s point of view… What am I aiming for?

  8. Key #2 CONTEXT From a teacher’s point of view… Why is this important? From a student’s point of view… Why should I care?

  9. Key #3 CULTURE From a teacher’s point of view… How do I show my support? From a student’s point of view… Who is invested in my success?

  10. Key #4 CHALLENGE From a teacher’s point of view… How do I balance challenge and skill for this student? From a student’s point of view… How is it working for me?

  11. Engaged or Compliant? • Pursues own train of thought regardless of task at hand or feedback from staff which may make it difficult to finish in a timely manner • Completes work with no expectation for personal relevance, connection, or interest • Constantly questions both text and people to better understand an issue, topic, or problem • Participates in group activities and discussion when prompted E C E C
