Case Study 1

Geologic Time Period

Neoproterozoic – Early Cambrian.

This is the period of transition from the Precambrian to the Cambrian era.

The study was based on sedimentary sequences in southern Australia.

Critters!

Sabelliditids

Skeletogenous

Ediacaran Fauna

EDIACARA SEQUENCE

  • The Ediacaran sequence marks the “extinction” of the Ediacaran fauna (a soft bodied organism.

URATANNA SEQUENCE

  • The Urtatanna sequence represents an environmental change in sea level depth.

  • The fluctuation of sabelliditids (worm-like critters) occurs.

PARACHILNA SEQUENCE

  • The Parachilna sequence represents a further change in sea level.

  • This is the time period in which skeletogenous (hard bodied) critters exploded onto the scene.
