  1. RHIC II Science Workshop Welcome & Introduction: BNL Perspective on the Science Workshops S. Aronson Physics Department

  2. Overview • Why are we starting a series of meetings on the case for RHIC II science? • What do we hope to accomplish with these meetings? • What is our time scale? • Agenda for this first meeting

  3. Purpose of the RHIC II Science Workshops • BNL and the RHIC Community need to focus on the compelling questions that define the next phase of RHIC physics • If, as we expect, significant upgrades to the capabilities of the RHIC complex are needed to address many of these questions, the case for them has to be made in the next NP Long Range Plan • These workshops are meant to provide the means for the community to come together and come to grips with these questions

  4. Goals of the RHIC II Science Workshops • RHIC II Science Drivers • What are the compelling questions as seen from this vantage point? • A roadmap beyond the discovery phase is not yet well articulated to the NP community • We need to address this as part of making the RHIC II case for the next LRP • The goals of these workshops are to • Identify the key science drivers • Study quantitatively the key measurements that address these questions and the facility capabilities that are needed for these measurements

  5. Schedule for the Workshops • LRP Schedule • Resolution meeting - Summer 2006 • Town Meetings - early CY 2006 • RHIC II case assembled by late CY 2005 • Science Drivers articulated by Spring 2005 followed over the subsequent 6 months by • simulations • detector & machine requirements • white paper

  6. This Meeting • Organize • Topics • Working groups • Schedule • Agenda • Theoretical perspectives and vision • Experimental perspective and plans • LHC-HI plans as context

  7. Observations & Summary • We need to be flexible, to allow new ideas to emerge during this process • We need to be mindful of the many demands of a vital and active ongoing program on the time people have to spend on this exercise • We also need to maintain awareness of the budget constraints on the whole field: success in this endeavor is a prerequisite for continuation of this program beyond the next few years!
