Revista Brasiliera de Saúde Materno Infantil – a case study • The Brazilian Journal of Mother and Child Health (Revista Brasiliera de Saúde Materno Infantil, RBSMI) is the only journal currently dealing with the clinical and epidemiological health problems of the mother and child in Latin America. • Its editorial headquarters are based at the Instituto Materno Infantil Professor Fernando Figueira (IMIP, www.imip.org.br ) in Recife, northeastern Brazil. • IMIP, founded in 1960, is one of the largest hospitals in Latin America specializing in mother and child health and is a regional center of excellence for pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology , human reproduction and pediatric surgery. • It currently treats over 600,000 women and their infants per year and supports extensive graduate and postgraduate training in all of the areas listed above. It has also a large experience in publishing scientific medical books.

Revista Brasiliera de Saúde Materno Infantil – a case study • The journal started life in 1987 as the Revista do IMIP, and was relaunched as RBSMI in 2001, the intention being to develop the publication as an international focus for research in the field. • Early indicators of its success include the high volume of article downloads via Scielo (www.scielo.org) (6100 between Sept 2003 and March 2007) and the high Scielo-based impact factor (0.25). • Manuscript submissions have increased from 27 during the launch year to 262 in 2006. The current print run is 2000 and is distributed to all Brazilian libraries and professional associations in the field as well as a number of institutions overseas. • The journal is currently under review for inclusion in MEDLINE.
