  1. Residential Life, Athletics, and Greek Life Fall 2008 Alcohol Use and Risk Behavior Survey

  2. Methodology • This study was conducted during October and November 2008 due to delayed IRB process. • A total of 3,237 students from Residential Life (1,958), Greek Life (917), and Athletics (339) were sent the electronic survey via email. • We used Survey Share on-line software to develop the survey electronically, to ensure ADA compliance and to send out the participation requests. • Respondents’ IP addresses were not sent to us upon receipt of their completed surveys in order to protect the respondents’ privacy. • Data was downloaded into SPSS 16.0 for analysis. • Results are reported in valid percentages.

  3. Results • A total of 415 students completed the survey. • This is a response rate of 13%

  4. Comparison Data • The following summary data are compared to the 2008 Student Health Status Survey, the ATOD Alcohol Use and Risk Behavior Survey 2007, and the Prevention Research Center’s 2006 Safer California Schools Study. • The Health Status Survey surveyed 328 randomly sampled CSULB students in the Fall of 2008. • The 2007 ATOD Alcohol Use and Behavior Risk Survey had a sample size of 600. • The Safer California Schools survey randomly sampled 403 CSULB students.

  5. Limitations • A lower Percentage of students from all categories completed the survey (18.5% is 2007 compared to 13% in 2008) • Students with multiple affiliations may have their answers analyzed as part of one group only, possibly contributing to the lower percentages of responses. • Students participating in the Health Status Survey may also, be part of the groups used for the Alcohol Use Survey.

  6. Gender Response Rates CSULB University Research states that in Fall 2008, 39.6% of students were male and 60.4% of students were female.

  7. Class Standing

  8. Living Arrangement The drastic difference in the number of campus residents completing the Alcohol use survey is caused by the HSS being a random sample of all CSULB students and the vast majority reside off campus.

  9. Participants’ G.P.A.

  10. Smoking • Over 80% students from both groups identified as non-smokers. • The special group participants were more likely to seek pharmocological help vs. self help with smoking cessation plans. • In 2008, 97% of Alcohol Use Survey and 96% of HSS participants reported being exposed to second hand 0-2 or less hours per day.

  14. Alcohol • Alcohol Use Survey students are more likely (41% vs. 34%) than HSS 2008 participants to be non-drinkers. • 59% of Alcohol Use Survey students did not engage in risky drinking during the past month, compared to 42% of HSS students. • 84% of Alcohol Use Survey students reported they did not drive under the influence compared to 57% of HSS 2008 students.
