Consequences of the Terrorist Act • Several hundred victims including more than 300 children were killed. • Some families lost 5 and more members. • More than a hundred children lost one of the parents. 17 kids became complete orphans. • About 800 hostages survived, more than a half of them are children. • Practically the whole population of the town (30,000) was exposed to the traumatic event (suffered from post traumatic stress disorder)

  5. In September 2004 the first center for psychological rehabilitation was opened in Beslan public hospital. For a long time it has been the only institution that rendered psychological assistance to the victims.

  6. Founders of the Centre • Elena Morozova, child psychologist, PhD, Russian Academy of Medicine, Moscow. • Alexander Venger, Child Psychologist, PhD, professor, “Dubna” International University, Moscow. • Tatiana Ryzhova – Chief Psychiatrist of North Ossetia.

Rehabilitation Centre Staff • 6 psychologists • 1 social worker • Curator of the Centre – Tatiana Ryzhova, Chief Psychiatrist of North Ossetia • 2 supevisors – E.Morozova, A.Venger (permanent distant supervision via the Internet, every 3 months - visits to Beslan: direct supervision and advanced professional training for specialists working with families)

  9. Main Objectives of the Centre (First Stage) • Intensive Psychotherapy for the victims (children and parents) • Emergency psychological assistance to support professionals (doctors, nurses, teachers, psychologists)

  10. At present the centre renders a larger range of services • Complex out-of-town work with the families • Rehabilitation of medical staff • Teenager volunteer work • Work with disabled children

  11. Psychological Assistance to the Families Goal: renewal of family connections and bonds: Usually we do not work with a child on the individual basis, but with the family as a whole.

  12. Widowers who had to take care of little children were the greatest challenge for the psychologists. They needed the longest time to recover from their deep psychological wounds..

  18. Project Main results (2004-2008) • Improvement in psychological state of children and parents (about 2,000 consultations) • Permanent monitoring of children psychological state on the permanent basis. • Higher level of psychological culture of the population. .

  24. Challenges and needs • Special training for professionals (early intervention, clinical psychology, art therapy) • Lack of a child psychiatrist involved in the project • Transportation challenges with out-or-town programs

  25. Transportation challenges - 1 • In January 2005 “Expomed” corporation donated a mini-bus to Beslan children. The first purpose was to help kids who live in far- away villages to get to the rehab centre. The second - to make it possible for families and medical staff to take part in various out-or-town rehabilitation programs, including those in Vladikavkas hippotherapy centre (35 km from Beslan).

  26. Transportation challenges - 2 • The bus is registered with the Beslan public hospital, but the expenses for the fuel and the driver’s wages are not envisaged in the hospital budget. For several months the vehicle has been in operation (CAF Charity Organization donated 55,000 roubles), but at present there is no money to pay for the fuel and to the driver. The Centre could not use the bus and had to terminate a number of effective out-of-town family rehabilitation programs.
