  2. Icebreaker • Was it hard to name nutritious foods? • Do you eat all the foods you named? • If there are so many different kinds of nutritious foods, why are people eating fast food? • What did you learn from this activity?

Important Vocabulary • 6 essential nutrients: Carbohydrates, Fats, Proteins, Water, Vitamins, Minerals • MyPlate: Recommendations for healthy eating • Food Label: Provides nutrition facts to help consumer make a healthy choice • Calories: units of energy found in food • Portion: appropriate/recommended healthy amount of food for one sitting

  4. Think about this • Everything in Moderation. • Ok to have junk food/fast food every once in a while • Our entire body/health is affected by nutrition • Attitude • Alertness/Energy • Ability (physical and mental) • Weight • Self-esteem

  5. Activity 1-Food Log • HOMEWORK-Individual • Keep a 3 consecutive day food diary (due by data entry day) • Enter data into computer program for analysis on ____________ in class • Write a reflective summary of your data • PROJECT DUE: __________

  6. Activity 2-Food Group Jeopardy • Two teams • Answer questions to accumulate points in the game • Take notes on the different food groups during the game

Activity 3-Rate Yourself • I try to stay at a healthy weight for my height. • I try to be physically active most days of the week. • My daily food choices align with the government recommendations. • My weekly fitness levels resemble the fitness pyramid. • I eat a variety of whole grains. • I eat a variety of fruits and vegetables daily. • I follow guidelines to keep food safe. • My diet is low in saturated fat and cholesterol. • I avoid beverages full of sugar. • I do not add salt to prepare foods.

  8. Activity 3-continued • Health Nut (9-10 yes) Great job! Keep up the great work and spread the word! • Road to Wellness (6-8 yes) You are making a lot of healthy choices. You’re on your way to healthy wellbeing. Small changes are what you need. • Oh NO! (0-5 yes) Although you may have some healthy nutritional habits, it’s time to make modifications. Try picking one habit at a time to change. Make a plan and enlist other to help you stay on track.

  10. Activity 4-Puzzling Pieces • Individually • Move from station to station • Put the puzzle pieces together in order to complete the worksheets for each of the 6 nutrients • *HOMEWORK: Nutrient Crossword puzzle

We need them!! • BMR: calories our bodies need just to operate functions (1400 daily) • 3500 calories in one pound • Calories in vs. Calories out • Maintain weight: Calories in=Calories Out • Lose weight: Calories in < Calories Out • Gain weight: Calories in > Calories Out

  12. Calories in nutrients • Fat= 9 calories per gram • Protein= 4 calories per gram • Carbohydrates= 4 calories per gram • Alcohol= 7 calories per gram

  16. Activity 5-Portion Sizes • Groups of 3-4 • With your food item, pour/dish out how much of the food the average teen eats at one setting • Now pour/dish our how much of the food you think is the “serving size”

  18. Activity 6-Food Label Scavenger Hunt • Groups 2-3 • Read the handout, “Read the Label” • Teacher will call out item on the food label. • As a group, determine who has the healthiest number pertaining to that element • Be able to defend choice!

  19. Activity 8-Cereal Marketing • Individually • Read directions for “Lesson Helper #6-Food Labels” • Design/create a flyer for the healthy cereal

Activity 9-Alternative match-up • Partners • Using the pictures of food on the board, make 10 matches of healthy and unhealthy pairs of foods (these should be similar foods that might be able to be substituted for each other.) • Tell why you think the healthier version is healthier • *HOMEWORK: Home/School Connection Sheet
