Apparel Construction and Textiles 1 Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12 One Semester Prerequisite: None Course Cost: based on projects chosen by student Clothing Construction and Needlecraft skills Able to choose individual projects Computerized sewing machines and Sergers are available for constructing garments

Apparel Construction and Textiles 2 Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12 One Semester Prerequisite: Apparel Construction and Textiles 1 Course Cost: based on projects chosen by student Gain experience and skills in clothing construction Selection of challenging projects Emphasis on individual figures and color analysis

  9. Child Development and Human Growth Grade: 10, 11, 12 One Semester Prerequisite: None Parenting, guidance, prenatal/postnatal care Physical, emotional, social, and intellectual growth Development from infancy to adolescence Skills in communication, resource management, and problem solving

Commercial Baking 1 Grades: 10, 11, 12 One Year; 2-period session (BTC) Prerequisite: Focus on Foods Course Cost: $50.00 for consumables Transportation is provided Basic understanding of yeast, sweet and quick dough, pie, pastry, cake production Emphasis in scaling ingredients, kitchen math, and formula expansion Able to use industrial equipment and will apply sanitation procedures to food production Credit may be applied toward the minimum fine arts graduation requirement

Commercial Baking 2 • Grades: 11, 12 • One Year; 2-period session (BTC) • Prerequisite: Commercial Baking 1 or Culinary Arts 1 • Course Cost: $50.00 for consumables • Transportation is provided • Advanced applications of bread, pastry, cake, and icing skills • Plate presentation skills • Sanitation, scaling ingredients, culinary math, and formula expansion • Introduction to European formulas • Credit may be applied toward the minimum fine arts graduation requirement

Culinary Arts 1 • Grades: 10, 11, 12 • One Year; 2-period session (BTC) • Prerequisite: Focus on Foods • Course Cost: $50.00 for consumables • Transportation is provided • Introduction to the fundamentals of culinary arts and food service hospitality • Preparation skills, quantity food production, service of food, use of commercial equipment, and other facets of the hospitality industry • Credit may be applied toward the minimum fine arts graduation requirement

Culinary Arts 2 • Grades: 11, 12 • One Year; 2-sessions (BTC) • Prerequisite: Culinary Arts 1 or Commercial Baking 1 • Course Cost: $50.00 for consumables • Transportation is provided • Emphasis on the fundamentals of classical cuisines • Culinary arts and food service careers are explored through field trips and guest speakers • Related job experience is offered throughout the year • Credit may be applied toward the minimum fine arts graduation requirement • Course may qualify for JCCC advanced setting credit

  14. Family and Consumer Science Independent Study • Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12 • One Semester or One Year • Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation • Individual research and development activities • Course objectives and methods of evaluation will be developed by the student and teacher assigned

Fashion Merchandising • Grades: 11, 12 • One Semester • Prerequisite: None • Study fashion topics such as color, line and design, textiles, fashion trends and sales, and promotion and visual merchandising • Explore entrepreneurial avenues • Connections with area retailers will provide career exploration opportunities • Credit may be applied toward the minimum fine arts graduation requirement

Financial Literacy • Grades: 11, 12 • One Semester • Prerequisite: None • Comprehensive study of personal financial literacy designed for all students • Learn how to make informed financial decisions related to budgeting, banking, credit, insurance, taxes, and career exploration • Apply decision-making skills that enable students to become more responsible consumers for lifetime success

Focus on Foods • Grades: 9, 10, 11, 12 • One Semester • Prerequisite: None • Course Cost: $20.00 • Learn a variety of cooking and baking techniques through hands-on team lab experiences • Create appetizers, entrees, and desserts • Learn about nutrition, menu planning, and safety • Work through ServSafe curriculum with certification as an option

Advanced Foods • Grades: 10, 11, 12 • One Semester • Prerequisite: Focus on Foods • Course Cost: $20.00 • Emphasis on nutrition, meat recipes, garnishes, and specialty desserts • Throughout the course food presentation, etiquette, consumer skills, and entertaining will be taught • Participation in a regional food project and exploration of the foods industry • Credit may be applied toward the minimum fine arts graduation requirement

International Foods • Grades: 10, 11, 12 • One Semester • Prerequisite: Focus on Foods or Teacher approval • Course Cost: $20.00 • Cuisines of the world are emphasized through food selections and preparations • Learn how culture, customs, traditions, and geographical factors influence worldwide food choices, habits, and preparation

  20. Food Science • Grades: 10, 11, 12 • One Semester • Prerequisite: Focus on Foods • Use scientific method to study the biological and chemical basis of food fermentation, preservation, processing, and preparation • Experiment in laboratory setting through measuring, recording, and graphing data

  21. Interior Design Essentials • Grades: 10, 11, 12 • One Semester • Prerequisite: None • Course Cost: $10.00 • Learn about interior design careers and skills needed in the design industry • Topics covered include elements and principles of design, color theory, floor plans, and furniture arrangement • Work with a variety of materials to create an interior design project portfolio • Credit may be applied to the minimum fine arts credit requirement

  22. Interior Design Studio • Grades: 11, 12 • One Year • Prerequisite: Interior Design Essentials • Course Cost: $20.00 • Expand their design skills from Interior Design Essentials • Emphasis on housing, furniture, and decorating styles • Use computer-aided design technology in residential and commercial space planning • Study current trends and industry careers • Course may qualify for JCCC advanced standing credit • Credit may be applied toward the minimum fine arts graduation requirement

  23. Introduction to Restaurant Management • Grades: 10, 11, 12 • One Year-7 hours per week (BTC) • Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in Culinary Arts 1or 2, Commercial Baking 1or 2, and an application, interview, and written assessment • Course Cost: $50.00 for consumables • Transportation is provided • Learn to be restaurant entrepreneurs • Instructed on quality service, restaurant financials, management, food production, beverage service, modified table service, marketing, and promotion • Students will run the Broadmoor restaurant and perform front-of-the-house operations and culinary/baking production duties

  24. Leadership and Community Partnership • Grades: 12 • One Year • Prerequisite: None • Develop the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully plan and implement service projects for non-profit organizations • Opportunities will be provided for the student to partner with non-profit groups to participate as a leader • Topics include event coordination, promotion of events, legal issues, and more • Service learning activities combine academic study with community service to build student learning, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen the community

  25. Nutrition and Wellness • Grades: 10, 11, 12 • One Semester • Prerequisite: None • Course Cost: $20.00 • Learn about healthy foods and gain valuable information for making personal choices • Topics include food choices, nutrition, exercise and fitness, sustainability, and food trends

  26. Teacher Education 1 • Grades: 11, 12 • One Semester (2-hour course) • Prerequisite: Child Development or Child Development and Human Growth Recommended • Must provide own transportation • Health certificate and TB test administered no more than one year prior to the first day of school are required • Students develop lessen plans, study development theory, learning styles, and teaching methods • Students will observe certified teachers from K-8thgrade

  27. Teacher Education 2 • Grades: 12 • One Year • Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in Teacher Internship and completion of Exploring Teacher Education 1 or Teacher Education 1 • Must provide own transportation • Health certificate and TB test administered no more than one year prior to first day of school are required • Topics of study include classroom management, safety procedures, effective communication skills, assessment tools, and development theories. • Students prepare units of instruction in the areas of math, science, social studies, and reading

  28. Teacher Internship • Grades: 12 • One Year • Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in Teacher Education 2 and completion of Teacher Education 1 or Exploring Teacher Education 1 • Must provide own transportation • Health certificate and TB test administered no more than one year prior to the first day of school are required. • Students participate in hands-on classroom experience • Practice communication techniques by presenting lessons in math, science, social studies, and/or reading
