  4. What’s coming next … Release date: 3rd May 2002, price?

  5. Palm Concept • Emphasis = PC Adjunct NOT PC Replacement • Function = Data collection/viewing NOT Processing • Therefore: • More efficient = faster software • Cheaper hardware • Don’t need fast processors (33MHz vs 206MHz) • Require less memory (8MB vs 32MB) • Slower processor/less memory = battery life

  6. Palm OS • Two basic file types: • *.PRC • Application files (like .EXE/.COM) • *.PDB • Database files linked to parent application • Files are hidden from user • Can be accessed using an ‘Explorer’-like utility • Because files linked, installing/uninstalling is easy and litter-free!

  7. What is a Conduit? • Windows/Mac software link • Unidirectional: • Backup • Palm software installation • Bidirectional: • Synchronization • ‘HotSync’

  8. Bidirectional = Synchronisation Unidirectional = Backup/Install What is a Conduit?

  25. Epocrates

  26. eBNF • ‘We are making strategic decisions about BNF e-delivery before we go down a particular path. Most of the problematic issues relate to quality assurance and maintenance of data feeds. There are also dependencies between the handheld project and other work on BNF editorial systems.’ • ‘We have several exploratory prototypes underway. Mostly for Palm, but we are also looking at options for generic formats that can be loaded on any device.’ Eric Connor Knowledge Systems Manager Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain

  27. What eBNF for Palm might look like • Based on WebBNF • http://www.bnf.org
