About the Organization- Salaam Baalak Trust • A non-profit, non-govt. organization • Established in 1988 • Works with street and working children in and around New Delhi, Old Delhi and Saket • Consists four full care shelter homes and seven contact points • 24 hours child helpline service • Annually covers approximately 4000 children

BACKGROUND OF - SBT/FHI • In1999 SBT collaborated with FHI and with their support we have started our first girl child shelter. • In 2002 we got a new project from FHI-(CAA – Children infected and affected by HIV/AIDS). USAID/FHI main focus was on HIV/AIDS care and prevention, we incorporated CAA components without affecting our organization mission and goal. • From April 2004 to August 2005 we got the extension of the same project with some new components as IMPACT project. • From September 2005 to June 2006 we got YOUTH NET project from FHI and extension of IMPACT from July 2006 to September 2006. • After successful completion of IMPACT we got the SAMARTH Demonstration project in October 2006.

  4. SBT/SAMATRTH/FHI/USAID- October 2006 to June 2011 SAMARTH • means Being equipped to be effective. • stands for Strengthen Ability to Manage and Respond effectively to HIV/AIDS. Goal To reduce vulnerability to HIV and risk behavior of street and working youth and children in New Delhi.

  5. STRATEGIES Strategy 1: Undertake strategic behavior communication (SBC) initiatives to reduce risk behavior of street youth and children and create an enabling environment. The activities undertaken by this strategy are: • Peer Education. • Life Skill Education (LSE). • Psychological support through counseling. • Mental Health and other supportive services for children with special needs. • Sensitization of local police on mental health needs and behaviors of street and working children. • Community awareness through use of creative media.

Strategy 2: • Address basic needs of street and working children through provision of child and youth friendly services. • The activities undertaken by this strategy are: • Health care. • Education support. • Vocational training and rehabilitation • Referral services • Strategy 3: • Development and implement a quality assurance and quality improvement (QA/QI) system. • The activities undertaken by this strategy are: • Develop and operationalize QA/QI framework. • Train project staff in program and technical areas. • Monitor adherence to SOPs • Develop a sustainability plan

  7. Strategy 4: Serve as a learning site for other organizations working on HIV prevention among vulnerable youth and children. The activities undertaken by this strategy are: • Conduct training of other partner organizations including United States Government (USG)-supported NGO partners. • Contribute to the documentation and dissemination of lesson learned. • Facilitate site visit.

CHALLENGES FACED • Mobile population especially at contact points • Paucity of Space for different activities. • Lack of awareness about the issues and problems among stakeholders • Networking with other agencies for difficult cases • No shelter for Physically and mentally challenged children • Lack of awareness about various issues among Govt. officials leads to inadequate response to SBT’s evolving needs • Difficult to motivate girls for shelter especially for drug de addiction

FUTURE PLAN • Under SAMARTH : • Training for other agencies • Capacity building of staff • Annual Play • Exposure visit of staff • Street play on A/B guideline at other NGOs • Networking with other NGO • Beyond SAMARTH • We are in process to start shelter home for 100 children with the help of Delhi Metro. • We are planning to start a new contact point next year.

BEYOND SAMARTH SUB-AGREEMENT • Food – Providing food to 300 children daily. • Provided shelter home to more than 650 children. • Enrollment in Education: • Formal School- 188 • NIOS – 83 • NFE – 1281 • Repatriation – 363 children • Transfer - 368 children ( to SBT shelters and Other NGOs) • Annual tour: • 100 children spent 10 days at Kerala • 50 children spent 7 days at Saat tal, Nainital during summer vacation.

QUALITATIVE ACHIEVEMENTS • 5 staff participated in LSE workshop organized by FHI. • 4 Counselors from SBT participated in Workshop on Counseling skills building organized by FHI. • Participated WAD on 30th November at YWCA, with all SAMARTH partners participated. • SBT children performed 27 street plays and 7 stage shows among which 2 plays were performed on Stigma and Discrimination at USAID Office. • SBT got Chalta firta School (Mobile School Van) from Govt. of Delhi. • 14 boys and 6 girls rehabilitated after Job placement. • Arushi- the girl child shelter has been shifted to SBT own shelter home Building.
