  4. SUSTAINABLE MOBILITY & PUBLIC SPACE PLAN. OBJECTIVES: • To reverse the upward trend in the use of the private car. To transfer car users to public transport and the bicycle. • To increase the quality of public space in terms of accessibility by way of car traffic reduction. • To implement innovative access and transit schemes according to the Superblocks philosophy. • To consolidate and extend the network of pedestrian and cycling reserved paths. • To redefine the overall PT network in order to improve the efficiency of the system in terms of accessibility and coverage. • To set up a new traffic control system giving priority to PT. • To test a new regulation scheme for freight distribution. 5. MOBILITY NETWORK:BASIC ROADS AND SUPER-BLOCKS CIVITAS Forum l19-21 October 2009 l Krakow (Poland) l Juan Carlos Escudero

  6. Criteria for the implementation of the new bus network • Network Integration: according to the superblocks scheme. • Continuity: consistency and reticular morphology: forming a homogeneous and reticular network, achieving maximum efficiency. • Isotropy: the topology of the bus network design allows for isotropy of territory. • Coverage: accessible to the citizens. • Simplicity: bus stops at the grid nodes and spaced 400 meters giving full coverage to the territory. • Connectivity: designed to allow the user to reach the entire city with only one transfer. • Accessibility: accessible to citizens. CIVITAS Forum l19-21 October 2009 l Krakow (Poland) l Juan Carlos Escudero

  7. Some issues to highlight: • A deep change in the PT network • From the current one, based on 18 bus lines to a totally new integrated grid based on 1 tram line and 9 bus lines. • The approach to the implementation is being multidisciplinary and participatory. • Strong dissemination and information activities of the new transport network needed • Relocation of 144 bus stops and reduction of lines will require a strong dissemination campaign to minimise the confusion in our current users • Transfers between tram-bus lines will be essential • Expected Results • Increased journey frequency from 20’ to 10’ (15’ during weekends). • Increased speed of the PT network by 20%. • Increased number of journeys in PT by 15%.
