  2. BACKGROUND • IN 1685, THE ROMAN CATHOLIC JAMES II CAME TO THE THRONE OF ENGLAND • IN 1688, A GROUP OF ENGLISH NOBLES SENT A MESSAGE INVITING WILLIAM OF ORANGE TO TAKE THE ENGLISH THRONE.

  3. JAMES FLED TO FRANCE, BUT THEN CAME TO IRELAND IN MARCH 1689 AND HOPES TO WIN BACK HIS POWER WITH HELP FROM FRENCH • WAR BEGAN BETWEEN ARMIES OF JAMES II AND KING WILLIAM OF ORANGE

  4. DERRY • MANY PROTESTANTS TOOK REFUGE IN WALLED CITY OF DERRY • ARMY OF JAMES II ADVANCED ON CITY OF DERRY • A GROUP OF 13 APPRENTICE BOYS LOCKED THE GATES AGAINST THE CATHOLIC ARMY OF JAMES II

  5. APPRENTICE BOYS SLOGAN WAS “NO SURRENDER” • JAMES II WAS OUTSIDE DERRY CITY IN 1689 AND GOVERNOR OF CITY, LUNDY, WANTED TO SURRENDER

  6. SIEGE • SIEGE OF DERRY BEGAN AND LASTED 105 DAYS – THOUSANDS DIED FROM STARVATION AND DISEASE • PEOPLE IN CITY FORCED TO EAT DOGS AND RATS • KING WILLIAM SENT 3 SHIPS TO RELIEVE THE CITY • SIEGE ENDED WHEN SHIP CALLED MOUNTJOY BROKE THROUGH A BARRIER ACROSS THE FOYLE

  7. APPRENTICE BOYS ORGANISATION • THE APPRENTICE BOYS IS A PROTESTANT / LOYALIST ORGANISATION – • FIRST SET UP IN EARLY 1800’S • IT WAS SET UP IN MEMORY OF THE GROUP OF APPRENTICE BOYS WHO SHUT THE GATES OF DERRY

  8. THE MAIN MARCH ORGANISED BY THE APPRENTICE BOYS TAKES PLACE IN DERRY EACH YEAR IN AUGUST. • THERE IS AN ADDITIONAL PARADE IN DERRY EACH DECEMBER (THE 'LUNDY PARADE') TO COMMEMORATE THE CLOSING OF THE GATES.

  9. THE ASSOCIATION HAS AROUND 10,000 MEMBERS ACROSS EIGHT PARENT CLUBS BASED IN DERRY. • THESE CLUBS ARE NAMED AFTER SIEGE HEROES,

MEMBERS WHO LIVE AWAY FROM DERRY ORGANISE IN BRANCH CLUBS IN SCOTLAND, ENGLAND, THE REPUBLIC OF IRELAND AND CANADA • NEW CANDIDATES BECOME MEMBERS AT THE APPRENTICE BOYS MEMORIAL HALL. • ALL MEMBERS WEAR CRIMSON COLLARETTES AND ONLY PROTESTANT MEN CAN JOIN. • http://www2.apprenticeboys.co.uk/features/about-us/13-questions

  13. AUGUST 1969 APPRENTICE BOYS PARADE IN DERRY WENT AHEAD • NATIONALISTS IN BOGSIDE FEARED ANOTHER RUC ATTACK • RIOTS BROKE OUT AFTER THE APPRENTICE BOYS PARADE • THE BATTLE OF THE BOGSIDE LASTED FOR 2 DAYSp.51-52 • BRITISH GOVERNMENT SENT IN TROOPS TO RESTORE LAW AND ORDER

  14. CONSEQUENCES • MANY APPRENTICE BOYS PARADES IN 1970’s WERE BANNED • SOME PARADES ALLOWED BUT CONFINED TO WATERSIDE AREA • ALL CHANGED BY EARLY 1990’s – PEACEFUL PARADES WITHIN CITY WALLS • http://www.maidencityfestival.com/
