  2. Working Definition of Global Education Global education teaches those significant topics and issues that are shared, and/or must be solved, worldwide. TOPIC/ISSUE BASED – interdisciplinary/Information literacy (student is capable of finding information independently) ETHIC/RELATIONSHIP BASED – personal/social development COMMUNICATION/ACTION BASED – presentations/service learning

Working Definition of Sustainability Education • Teaches the Impact of Human Activity on the Environment that Affects Future Generations • TOPIC/ISSUE BASED – interdisciplinary/Information literacy (student is capable of finding information independently) • ETHIC/RELATIONSHIP BASED – personal/social development • COMMUNICATION/ACTION BASED – presentations/service learning

  4. Global and Sustainability Education • Sustainability Education Curriculum is not necessarily a “worldwide”– there can be local and regional emphases • All worldwide Sustainability Issues also become Global Education Issues – especially in the Global Security areas – food, water, etc.

  8. Global /Sustainability Education Learning Objectives 1. To Create topic/issue learning activities that are project based and collaborative 2. That are Age/Grade Specific, and ADD to the student’s skill development, and where possible are project based and collaborative 3. That require the student to communicate or act upon the results of the learning activity

  9. WHY Project Based Learning? TOPIC/ISSUE BASED, Given to Students as a Question ETHIC/RELATIONSHIP BASED, requires interpersonal interactions, and empathic dimension in problem-solving COMMUNICATION/ACTION BASED, presentation of project, and possibly action students will take PROJECT BASED LEARNING WEBSITE: http://pbl-online.org/

ADAPT FOR YOUR CLASS LEVEL EXAMPLE: SHARING WATER • Content Areas: ecology, math, health, social studies/history, international relations , ethics, communications, • Collaborative Students choose a US or WORLD Team for the Project following questions regarding Colorado River or the Tigris-Euphrates river systems • Ecology: what life is sustained by this water? • Social studies/history: Have there been previous struggles and agreements regarding sharing this water? • International Relations: Who is involved now? • Ethics: What would be the fair distribution of the water? • Communications: Coordinate the teams, find another school in a different culture to tell/share the project, community agency, conservation group, etc.
