  2. Big Idea • WVU Academic Innovation K-12 • Need for a Digital Transformation for Mathematics • Math 9 Community of Practice for Enhanced Teaching and Learning

  3. Academic Innovation

  4. WVU Academic Innovation K-12 • A branch of WVU Academic Innovation with an undertaking to extend educational opportunities to pre-college students.

  5. WVU Academic Innovation K-12 k12.wvu.edu • K-12 Standards Based Virtual Courses • Extended Learning Opportunities • Innovative Educational Resources • Preparation for College & Careers

  6. Exciting Time • Educational Reforms Present New Opportunities • Common Core State Standards • New Mathematics Instructional Strategies & Content • New Teacher Preparation • Prepare Students for an Innovation-Driven Economy • Increased Access to Technology

  7. Needs • Schools are under intense pressure for students to achieve higher gains on state and national “tests” • Teachers are coping to change from the way they learned to teach, to data-driven methods (New Evaluation) • States and Districts must utilizeCommon Core Standards & Next Gen Science Standards for developing content • Context - Students are able to achieve higher gains when they can connect learning to their life experiences • Competition for student interest is INTENSE! • West Virginia faces many different educational inequities

  8. Needs • 89% of high school teachers described their students as “well prepared” for college while only approximately 25% of college faculty believed that their incoming students were prepared for their courses • This report suggested a continuing lack of curriculum alignment between K-12 and Post-secondary (The Chronicle of Higher Education, 2013) • 67% of teachers expected to change their current curriculum "not at all" or "slightly" to fit the new standards.

  9. Addressing “Common” Challenges to in Implementing Common Core State Standards Integrated Math Curriculum Presented by Lou Maynus, Dr. Edna Meisel, & Greg Strimel

  10. Challenges • Inconsistent implementation • Inadequate on-going teacher support and professional development • Inadequate high quality, interactive, and engaging standards-based resources for use inside and outside the classroom. • Continuous gap between secondary and post-secondary mathematics • Absence of an evaluation system that enables data-driven decisions to inform mathematics curriculum and instruction.

  11. West Virginia • Current changes in education combined with new developments in learning technologies have presented the opportunity to revolutionize the way students learn and teachers teach.

  12. Creating a Community of Practice CURRICULUM ASSESSMENT SUPPORT TECHNOLOGY

  13. Opportunity • Use Our Resources • Support Teaching & Learning • Support the Implementation of New Standards • Replace Static Textbooks • Remove Inequalities • Next Generation Mathematics Communities of Practice

  14. Next Generation Community of Practice for Math 9 • Organized effort • Dynamic Media-Rich Course Modules • Teacher frustration • Self Efficacy • Continual Changes • Consistency • On-going Professional Development • Teacher Connections • Data-Driven Decisions

  15. Student Portal • Student Engagement • Self Efficacy • Self Evaluation • Blended learning • Remediation • Parent Access

  16. Virtual Courses

  17. Goals • Consistentapproach for teaching and learning the next generation mathematics regardless of location, teacher access, and socioeconomic status. • Connect teachers across schools to share innovative instructional and curricular strategies as well as to collaborate on confronting issues. • Develop rigorous digital content based-on the newly adopted standards in collaboration across the university and K-12 that will help close the gap between secondary and post-secondary education.

  18. Goals • Utilize innovative student assessment to track student education progress to promote mastery learning by enabling teachers and content designers to make data-based decisions on curriculum and instruction. • Increase student proficiency and participation among the STEM disciplines by using the latest technologies for creating state-of-art engaging digital activities and content. • Provide authentic real world educational experiences through the use of technology

  19. Benefits • Online teacher support system for the implementation of the WV Next Generation standards and curriculum • Create a consistency in the content and skills taught and practiced • Engaging digital content based on the WV Next Generation • Standards to be taught in a “blended” learning environment or in a virtual environment

  20. Partnership

  21. Educational Consortium

  22. End of an Era • Traditional teaching • Text Based Online • More interactivity with Content • Blended Learning • Mass differentiated Learning • Flipped Classrooms
