  3. Key element • In Expeditionary Learning schools, much of the academic work is done in learning expeditions -- long-term investigations of important questions and subjects that include individual and group projects, field studies, and performances and presentations of student work.

Key Characteristics • a joint emphasis on character and academics; • the quality, coherence and relevance of its program of professional development; • a sense of moral purpose; • its sustained work and continuing relationship with a growing system of improving schools around the country; • that it breathes life into a standards-based curriculum
