  3. Your research experience: • Finding sources • MLA formatting • Developing thesis • Including evidence in body paragraphs • Expanding on evidence/providing original analysis

  4. Your prompt, roughly, will be to research a topic related to American culture, identity, and history. • Many of these topics have probably already been addressed in some way in your first semester class. • While many of these topics are addressed in American literature, you are not required to limit your research to just their importance in literature.

  5. The American Frontier • Manifest Destiny • The American Dream • Nature and landscape • The immigrant experience • Family relationships; attitude toward children • Race, slavery, abolition, and/or race relations today • Feminism and women’s studies • Alienation • “Utopian Dream” • Technology – the “Machine in the Garden” • Experience of minorities Note: topics largely taken from csustan.edu/english/reuben/pal/append/AXJ.HTML
