  1. Happy Birthday, Mr. Lincoln! February 12, 1809

  2. On the back of the penny is an image of the Lincoln Memorial, which was built to honor Abraham Lincoln, our 16th President. You can see Lincoln sitting in the memorial in the center of the coin.

  3. The Lincoln Memorial is also featured on the back of the five dollar bill.

  4. The site for the Lincoln Memorial was chosen in the early 1900’s and is located at the edge of the Potomac River in Washington D.C.

  5. The memorial was built and finally dedicated 57 years after Lincoln’s death.

  6. The memorial is built like a Greek temple and has 36 huge columns that stand for the 36 reunited states at the time of Lincoln’s death.

  7. Inside the memorial, there is a huge sculpture of Abraham Lincoln. It is 19 feet tall and weighs 175 tons. A United States Flag is draped over the back of Lincoln’s chair..

  8. Above the sculpture is it says, “IN THIS TEMPLE AS IN THE HEARTS OF THE PEOPLE FOR WHOM HE SAVED THE UNION THE MEMORY OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN IS ENSHRINED FOREVER”

  9. Lincoln’s head is 3 feet 7 inches tall and 2 feet 7 inches wide and the whole statue is carved from 28 pieces of marble.

  10. One of Lincoln’s hands is making a fist symbolizing his strength and determination to see the Civil War end successfully.  The other hand is more open and relaxed to symbolize his kindness and warmth.  

  11. The Gettysburg Address, a speech made by Abraham Lincoln, is engraved on the south wall of the memorial and there is a mural above it.

  12. Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address is carved on the north wall of the memorial and there is another mural above it.

  13. In 1939 Marian Anderson, an African-American opera singer, performed from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

  14. In 1963 civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. There is an engraved tile marking the spot where he stood.

  15. On January 18, 2009, the inaugural celebration concert for President Barack Obama was held at the Lincoln Memorial.
