  1. C) Explain why many Muslims are against abortion SQUASH THEME

  2. Unit 3 Marriage and the Family

  3. 3.1 Changing attitudes towards marriage, divorce, family, and homosexuality in the UK

  4. Where two sets of children (step brothers and sisters) become one family when their divorced parents marry each other A legal ceremony giving a homosexual couple the same legal rights as a husband and wife Living together without being married Sexual attraction to people of the same sex Mother, father and children living together

  5. What do you think has changed in recent years?

  6. Split class into 3 groups. Each group has to come up with reasons why there has been changes

  7. Tolerance Christian teachings are no longer.. Women are less dependent on men for.... Less stigma attached to divorce

  8. Is the decline in marriage a good or bad thing?

  9. 3.2 Christian attitudes to sex outside marriage

  10. A sexual act between a married person and someone other than their marriage partner Having sex with a number of partners without commitment Adultery Promiscuity Staying with your marriage partner and having sex only with them Sex before marriage Faithfulness Pre-marital sex

  11. What do Christians think about sex before marriage?

  12. Why do many Christians believe sex out side of marriage is wrong? • Sex is an act of love and commitment and should only take place in marriage • Pre-marital sex and adultery are wrong • Avoid casual relationships and promiscuity

  13. c) Why do many Christians believe that sex outside of marriage is wrong? The teachings of the Bible Children born outside marriage may have a less stable family life Promiscuity makes a person vulnerable to sexual diseases Having loving sexual relations unites a married couple

  14. You shall not commit adultery Exodus 20:14 Do you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit? God wants you to be holy and completely free from sexual immorality (1 Thessalonians 4:3) The sexual act must take place exclusively within marriage. Outside marriage it always constitutes a grave sin (Catechism of the Catholic Church) Anyone who looks at A woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart Matthew 5:28

  15. Cohabitation

  16. Roman Catholic, Church of England or Liberal?

  17. You should only have sex if you are married! People who cohabit are always accepted into our church Cohabiting is okay aslong as it’s step towards marriage

  18. One reason why some Christians believe that sex outside marriage is wrong is Because of the teachings of the Bible. The Bible clearly states that sex outside Marriage is wrong – ‘You shall not commit adultery Exodus 20:14’ A second reason why some Christians believe that sex outside marriage is wrong is that Children born outside marriage may have a less stable family life . The mother and father are less committed to each other and therefore may find it easier to leave. A third reason is that promiscuity makes a person vulnerable to sexual diseases. if a person has sex with people they do not know well then it’s more likely that they are unaware of their lifestyle. In a marriage two people know each other well and are committed to each other. A fourth reason is that having sex exists to unite a married couple and bring them Closer together. Therefore, it should only happen between two people who are married. Sex doesn’t just exist for fun.

  19. 3.3 Muslim attitudes to sex outside marriage

  20. ‘Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty: that will make for greater purity for them: and Allah is well acquainted with all that they do’ (Surah 24:30) ‘Nor come nigh to adultery for it is a shameful deed and an evil opening the road to other evils’ (Surah 17:32) From reading these extracts, what do you think the Qu’ran says about adultery?

  21. So...sex outside marriage is considered wrong ..because the main purpose of sex is to make babies

  22. Unmarried people must not have sex or get involved in pre-marital intimacy • Upon reaching puberty, girls and boys are often separated and don’t mix with the opposite sex apart from close family members • It is also forbidden for Muslims to behave in a sexual manner – men and women should dress modestly and should not wear tight or revealing clothing

  23. ‘And say to the believing women that they should ..draw their veils over their bosoms, and not display their beauty except to their husbands’ sons, their brothers or their brothers’ sons, or their sisters’ sons, or their womenfolk…’

  24. Choosing who to marry...

  25. True/false? Most Muslims in western countries can’t choose who they marry. In some Islamic countries men are allowed more than one wife but the wife has to agree to it This polygamy is allowed in the UK

  26. Joint lesson 3.4 Christian attitudes to divorce

  27. Key term: re-marriage Marrying again after being divorced from a previous marriage, or after the death of a marriage partner

  28. What is a divorce? The legal termination of a marriage. in the UK you are allowed a divorce if the marriage has ‘irretrievably broken down’

  29. Official reason given why they divorced? unreasonable behaviour

  30. Not all Christians have the same view about divorce...

  31. Roman Catholic Protestant Yes in some circumstances, but you should always try to save the marriage first. Divorce should be a last resort Jesus said divorce was wrong ‘anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery..’ They have become one flesh so it’s impossible Marriage is a sacred agreement People can make mistakes and relationships do breakdown God is always willing to forgive sins

  32. So, we can never say 'all Christians are against divorce' ...because it depends on their denomination

  33. 3.5 Muslim attitudes to divorce

  34. Remember..UK law says that all citizens can get divorced... ...but a Muslim would also have to consider what the Qu'ran says

  35. It is permitted but not encouraged.. It is said to be one of the things least liked by Allah The Muslim laws on divorce are designed to help the couple to reconcile if at all possible.. There is a waiting period that is extremely important Islamic teaching is not designed to make unhappy couples stay together but to find out if they truly want to get divorced

  36. (1) Adultery(2) Unreasonable behaviour(3) Desertion OR (4) Two years' separation with consent(5) Five years' separation without consent

  37. If you want to give more detail in your answers…. (A – C) • Husband has to announce his intention to divorce his wife three times over three months (they still live together but don’t have sex to prevent pregnancy) • The husband is still financially responsible for his ex wife unless she remarries. • A woman can divorce her husband under certain circumstances: long – term absence, long imprisonment, refusal to provide for her, an inability to have sex • Divorce is automatically granted if one partner leaves Islam

  38. Practice question: • What is the definition of remarriage? • Do you think people should be allowed to divorce? • Explain Christian attitudes towards divorce

  39. Joint lesson 3.6 Christian teachings on family life

  40. family =

  41. Care for them properly • Teach them how to live and to accept authority • Teach them about God • Take their child to be baptised and bring them up in a loving, Godly home. In return children should respect their parents and obey them until they are adults themselves

  42. ‘Children, obey your parents…Parents, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the instruction of the Lord’ Ephesians 6:1,4)

  43. How is the Church involved in family social life? • Try to help parents raise their children in a stable, Christian environment • Starts at the beginning of life with baptism • Continues with confirmation • Sunday schools • Family services on Sundays • Organisations like Brownies • Childrens’ services

  44. How does the Church help and support its members? • Offers help and advice • Counselling • Run organisations such as the Child welfare council/Catholic Marriage Advisory Council
