  1. Creating Stand Maps, Generating Plot Maps, and Upload/Download Plot Points to GPS

  2. Create Stand Map with Topo Base Map • Open ArcMap • In ArcMap, select File → Add Data.. → Select Layers • Example • Topo Map (tif file): l47.tif • Stand Boundary (shapefile): FS_Cat_Creek.shp

  3. View can be changed using “zoom in”, “zoom out” functions on tool bar. • Characteristics of stand boundary (i.e., fill and line color) can be changed by clicking on the symbol in the layers window.

  4. Generating Systematic Plot Grids

  5. Calculating Distance between Points for Systematic Sampling

  6. Generate Inventory Plot Grids Arctoolbox→ Data Management Tools → Feature Class → Create Fishnet

  7. Generate Inventory Plot Grids • Input new feature name • Constrain to stand boundary • Input number plot spacing • Input ‘0’ to autofill into stand polygon

  8. Generate Inventory Plot Grids

  9. Generate Inventory Plot Grids • Make sure necessary amount of points are within layer. • If too few points lower spacing. • If too many points randomly select points from existing points

  10. Clip Inventory Plot Grid

  11. Clip Inventory Plot Grid

  12. Clipped Inventory Plot Grid

  13. Random Selection of Plots from Systematic Plot Grids

  14. Generate/Select Random Points Arctoolbox→ Data Management Tools → Feature Class → Create Random Points

  15. Randomly Sample Inventory Plot Grid • Input new feature name • Constrain to point grid • Input number of points to be selected

  16. Randomly Selecting Points

  17. Download/Upload Plot Points to Garmin GPS using DNR Garmin

  18. Exporting Points from GPS Unit • Plug sync cable into computer and then into GPS unit • GPS unit must be turned on • Open DNR Garmin Software • Select: GPS Set Port Port USB (Port # when not using USB adaptor

  19. Exporting Points from GPS Unit • Select: GPS Open Port • Select: GPS Units Feet • Select: File Set Projection Select ESRI Datums/Projections NAD_1983_StatePlane_Kentucky_FIPS_1600_Feet • Press OK

  20. Exporting Points from GPS Unit • Select: Waypoint or Track Download • Highlight points or tracks you want to download • Select: File Save to Select Save as type “ArcView Shapefile (Projected) (*.shp)” Enter File Name Press Save

  21. Uploading Points to GPS Unit • Plug sync cable into computer and then into GPS unit • GPS unit must be turned on • Open DNR Garmin Software • Select: GPS Set Port Port USB (Port # when not using USB adaptor)

  22. Uploading Points to GPS Unit • Select: File Load From File… • Select ArcView Shapefile (* .shp) in “Files of type:” • Select the shapefile for the points you want to upload in the file browser frame and choose Open • Change Identity or Comment fields as desired and choose OK • Choose OK in pop-up window, points should appear in DNR data table • Select: Waypoint Upload
