Mrs. Boudreau • Graduated from Olivet Nazarene University • 10th year in the Summit Hill School District  • Teaching Experience • 1st grade (Indian Trail) • 2nd grade (Indian Trail) • 4th grade (Bourbonnais) • 5th grade (Manteno) • Husband – Tim; Full-time FF/Paramedic and Coach • Son – Caleb; 8th grade • Daughter – Kaylee; 1st grade • Come from a family of teachers • Mother (retired) • Father (retired) • Sister (4th grade teacher) • Goal ~Help your child have a fun and successful year in 5th grade!

  4. Math • Students need to practice their multiplication/division facts daily!! • Students will be completing multiplication time tests at various times throughout the year. • Some topics include: • Unit 1: Algebraic Thinking, Measurement, and Decimals • Unit 2: Fraction Concepts, Expressions, and Operations • Unit 3: Proportions, Percent, and Geometry • Unit 4: Integers, Algebra, and Probability • Students will be given the opportunity to borrow a Math CD-Romfor the year. This allows the students to leave their textbook at school and still have a CD copy at home to use/reference on their computers.

  5. Language Arts • Rotate unit in the book and then a new type of writing(6 + 1 Traits) • We will be organizing English notes very thoroughly including a table of contents for each unit. • Students can use class notes on quizzes & tests. • Students will study grammar units and incorporate grammar skills into writing. • Students will be reading, analyzing, and writing poetry.

Reading • New vocab words introduced at beginning of story/chapter and • assessed after reading of text. • Silent reading and read aloud daily • Assessment on each story may be a project or test • NWEA testing in reading, language, and math during Fall, Winter, • and Spring • RTI three times a week to reinforce skills • In reading we will also work on writing, listening, poetry, and • fluency skills. • The text includes all types of reading genres. • We will also aim to read a variety of novels throughout the year. • Students will participate in Guided Reading, Independent Reading, • Oral Reading, Literature Circles and other activities in class. • Students will learn to use various reading strategies in order to • better develop comprehension skills.

  7. Science • Students will be required to take notes. • I will show several short films in throughout the year to help build background for the students. • 5thGrade Science Rotation: • Light, Sound • Earth’s Changing Surface • Electricity and Magnetism • Animals • Students will be exposed to labs and learn about lab safety.

  8. Social Studies • Students will be required to take notes. • We will practice map skills throughout the year. • There is a test or project after each chapter. • Any test of a D or F must be signed and returned the next day. • There will be a review to reinforce skills in class before each test! • There might not be homework each day. We have a lot of discussion and note taking during class. We also watch video segments pertaining to the subject area. • Topics include Colonization and the American Revolution • Class is very vocabulary intensive. Please review terms nightly. • I will show several short films in social studies to help build background for the students.

Homework Policy (1 of 2) • Homework usually involves completing class work not finished during the school day. • Students may have an average of 50 – 60 minutes of homework daily. • If homework is NOT completed due to a family emergency, please send me a note/email stating so; otherwise it’s considered late.

  10. Homework Policy (2 of 2) • 1st missing assignment: A warning is given. • The student fills out missing assignment sheet, parent signs it, and the student is sent to study hall to complete the work. • If the student cannot attend study hall, the work is to be completed at home and brought back the next day. • If work is still not brought back the next day- student receives another missing assignment- 10% is taken off of work- and student goes to study hall. • 3 missing assignments will result in a phone call home and a suggestion that the student attends academic assistance after school.

  11. Grading • Each student will be assessed by tests, quizzes, homework/classwork, and various projects throughout the year. • Students will bring home work as it’s graded and handed back. Please check with your child daily and review their work. If there are questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me. • Grades will be available online and can be accessed by using your username and password. • Mid-quarter progress reports will be available to students receiving a “D” or “F” only. • It is important that your child understands we are working together to help them be successful! 

  12. District Grading Scale • A 90-100 • B 80-89 • C 70-79 • D 60-69 • F 59-below

  13. Discipline Policy • Our class has a behavior policy that allows the students to document their behavior when PBIS rules are broken. • When a student is making choices that do not promote a positive learning experience, they will be directed to our ‘Behavior Book’ in which they will document their name, date, PBIS Rule that has been broken and any comments that need to be added at that time. • The following disciplinary actions will be given: • First Offense – Verbal Warning • Second Offense – Written Warning (Behavior Book) • Third Offense – Loss of Intramural time (Time depends on situation) • Fourth Offense – Phone Call Home • Fifth Offense – Referral to Office • Each day is a fresh start. 

  14. Positive Rewards • Various rewards will be given throughout the year. Some may include, but are not limited to: • Positive notes/phone calls home • Classroom party • Paws tickets (to purchase items at Paw-Mart) • Certificates • Positive notes/phone calls to Mr. Ruffalo and/or Mrs. Wright

  15. Specials Schedule • Monday – • Technology (Term 1) • Art (Term 2) • Music (Term 3) • Tuesday – P.E. • Wednesday – P.E. • Thursday – Technology (see above) & Library • Friday – P.E.

  16. NO PEANUTS ALLOWED! • We are a peanut free classroom. • Please help us keep all students safe by washing your hands often and sanitizing when available.

  17. Weapons Policy • Weapons, even look-alikes, are NOT allowed at school or on school property at any time. • Please note that anything that looks like a weapon (toy squirt guns, swords, knives, razor blades, etc.) are considered weapons and the proper disciplinary actions will be taken. • Parents should always know what their children are bringing to school. I ask that you kindly take a few moments to check your child’s bag often to ensure that this policy is followed.

  19. Parent/Teacher Conferences • Please sign up for Parent/Teacher Conferences before you leave. • These are scheduled to take place in November. • Reminders will be sent home prior to conferences. 
