  4. Phrase: Definition • A phrase is a group of words that can do the function of an adjective/adverb/noun/verb/preposition. • A phrase can have a noun or a verb. But it will never have a subject doing action. • Examples: • leaving behind the dog • smashing into a fence • before the first test

  5. Types of Phrases: Five Noun phrase • my two wonderful dogs • the tallest building in the world • couldn’t go • will be working • very friendly • afraid of the dark • really fast • much quicker • near the post office • on the desk Verb phrase Adjective phrase Adverb phrase Preposition phrase

  7. Clauses: Definition • Groups of words in which there is a subject doing an action are called Clauses Subject-verb combination - mandatory

  8. Types of Clauses: Independent and Dependent/ Subordinate • I like tea (complete idea is conveyed) • I like tea that Kaushal makes. Dependent Clause cannot convey a full idea until it is combined with Independent Clause Independent Clause Dependent/ Subordinate Clause

  9. Examples: Dependent and Independent Clauses Identify Clauses and their types: • I went to hotel which was expensive. • He is a lady who taught me cooking. • She met him when he boarded metro at Rajiv Chowk. • I saw Dhruv when I was driving yesterday. • I read the book that you bought me.

Types of Sentences: Definition • Simple Sentences – Sentences with an Independent Clause only • Complex Sentences – Sentences that have an Independent Clause and one or more Dependent Clauses • Compound Sentences – Sentences with two Independent Clauses combined with a Conjunction like and/ but/ since etc.
