  2. Endangered Species • Definition- A species that is thought to be at risk of extinction in the near future. Scientists have paid more attention to endangered species so they can try to save them from extinction.

  3. 5 Most Common Reasons for Endangerment • Habitat loss(deforestation, development, and environmental disasters) • Hunting-Either for food or prize. • Disease-Which can spread rapidly. • Introduction of exotic species that becomes a predator or a competitor. • High predator levels and parasitism.

  4. How to Help Prevent Endangerment • Educate others on what is happening and how they can help. • Don’t use pesticides or herbicides. • Plant vegetables and habitat native to your area. • Visit and donate to nature refuges. • Create a wetland in your area to provide a habitat for many endangered species. • Buy eco-friendly products • Report poachers to local law enforcement.

  5. 3 Endangered Animals in Pa • Bog Turtle-This turtle is endangered because of habitat destruction mostly done by humans. (draining bogs, marshes ,and swampland) • Delmarva Fox Squirrel- This squirrel made its home here for a long time until deforestation destroyed most of their habitat and then has to compete for the remaining habitat with the common Grey Squirrel.

  6. 3 Endangered Species in Pa Cont. • Coastal Plain Leopard Fog- Lived in southern Pa for many years before industrial and developmental activity caused their habitat and breeding sites to disappear.

  7. 2 Endangered Plant Species in Pa • Swamp Pink- It’s beauty has causes many people to pick this flower which is one reason it’s endangered and a flood caused many to die and haven’t grown back. Blooms in May and June and is 2 inches long. • Sticky Goldenrod- Grows along the bank of the Susquehanna River in PA, because of erosion many fall into the river and die. ATVs also make this erosion happen faster.

Invasive Species • Invasive Species- A species that isn’t native to the are and is likely to cause economic and environmental harm to humans. • Native Species- A species that normally lives in an certain area and can live happily and efficiently there. • Introduced Species- A species that isn’t naturally found in an area but is introduced.

  10. Ways Invasive Species get in the Country • By accident(something or someone bringing it with them without knowing). • Intentionally( a person bringing them over knowingly). • By Birds or other animals • On ships(carries aquatic wildlife). • Lumber products( species hide in the holes).

  11. Ways Invasive Species Negatively Affect the Environment • Compete for food and habitat as some of the native species. • Ruins crops( Farmers lose money and population loses food). • Spread diseases to animals, plants, and humans. • Their populations can easily go out of control.

  12. Invasive Animals in Pa • Name-Norway Rat • Scientific Name- Rattus Norvegicus • From- Europe came in 1775 on ships • Niche- Are prey for dogs, cats, minks, snakes, large predatory birds. • Problem- Carry diseases and can wipe out ground nesting birds.

  13. Invasive Animals in Pa • Name- House Mouse • Scientific Name- Mus Musculus • From- Europe bought over by settlers • Niche- live in fields and houses eat and reproduce. • Problem- can over populate houses and fields destroying walls in the house and crops in fields.

  18. Reintroduced/Extirpated Species • Reintroduced Species- is a release of a extinct species into the wild where this species formerly inhabited. • Extirpated Species- Putting species back into their natural environments.

  19. Reintroduced Species in Pa Elk • By 1867 there weren’t elk in Pennsylvania due to rapid settlement. • The reintroduction took place from 1913-1926 • 177 elk were transferred to Pa.
