  2. “Wikipedia is the Devil” • THE GOLDEN RULE: Do not quote Wikipedia unless you’re writing about this significant wiki project and/or you want to compare its contents with those in a scholarly source such as a book or an article in an academic journal. • Do not quote other encyclopedias or dictionaries either! • Use Wikipedia as a spring board for further research Toni Sant | 2012 | 2

Providing a support mechanism • to ensure that our students: • discover ways to produce data on the internet rather than just consume it (i.e. Web2.0 basics) • understand how a wiki really works - collaboration + crowd-sourcing • comprehend difference in viewpoints - subjective / objective • learn to distinguish online sources - “reliable” / “less reliable” / “unreliable” Toni Sant | 2012 | 3

  6. The Assignment • Create a Wikipedia page about…OR • Edit an existing Wikipedia page about… • Article subject choices depend on course materials • Content is given more importance when assignment is for a module not focused on aspects of Internet studies directly
