  1. The Graves Are Not Yet Full Questions • Compare and contrast the reigns of Leopold or Mobutu. Who do you think was a worse leader? • Why did ethnic cleansing take place in the Congo – why did native Katangans wage a murderous war against the Kasaians? • To what do you attribute the Congo’s post-independence problems? To what extent do you (or do you not) think that history is to blame for these problems?

  2. Question 1 Task Question: Compare and contrast the reigns of Leopold or Mobutu. Who do you think was a worse leader? Tasks: • Make a T-chart with points of comparison and points of contrast – in note form. • Answer the question of who was a worse leader and list 3-5 reasons to support your argument.

  3. Question 2 Task Question: Why did ethnic cleansing take place in the Congo – why did native Katangans wage a murderous war against the Kasaians? Task: • List all of the reasons why this case of ethnic cleansing took place in the Congo. • List the myth that people maintain about why this ethnic cleansing (and I will add, many others like it) occurred.

Tasks: • Make a list of reasons to account for the Congo’s post-independence problems. • Make a concise statement about the extent to which history is to blame or not, and make a list of 3-5 reasons/points to support your statement.
