  1. How to Throw and Binda Yoyo (the easy way) By: Hunter Drew

  2. Introduction To most, a yoyo only goes up and down. You throw it down, then flick your wrist and it comes up. But if you want to have a lot of fun and impress others, you may want to use an unresponsive yoyo. An unresponsive yo-yo does not come up at the flick of a wrist. If you are just learning on how to use one, it may be difficult to learn. This is the easiest way to do it. You must “bind” it to make it come back. Here’s how!

  3. Step 1 • Obtain a yoyo.(preferably an unresponsive one) Make sure the yoyo has a string. Taken by: Hunter Drew

  4. Step 2 • Take the loop on the end of your string and push the string through the loop, creating an adjustable loop. • Place your middle finger on your dominate hand in the loop and pull your hand up while holding the yoyo to tighten the loop. • Place the yoyo in your dominate hand with your palm up. The string must go underneath the yoyo. Pictures taken by: Hunter Drew

  5. Step 3 Now you can begin to throw the yo-yo. A good throw is very important in being able to bind the yoyo. • While still in your hand, raise your arm into a flexing position with your bicep almost parallel to the ground. • Keep a loose grip and let the yoyo sit in your hand. • Extend your elbow in a quick motion while allowing the yoyo to fall out of your hand. Do not keep a tight hold and allow the yoyo to roll off of your hand. • When the yoyo reaches the end up the string, turn your hand over. Taken By: Matt Botkin

  6. Step 4 Now you will need to ‘bind’ or bring the yoyo back. • Take your off-hand pointer finger and place it in the front middle part of the string and push back. • Bring your hand with the string attached directly above this finger and over. Continue bringing this hand down until the string is now in the middle of the yoyo. Then bring your hand behind the yoyo and turn your hand back over. (Continues on next page) Pictures taken by: Julie Drew

  7. Step 4 (Continued) • Slowly bring your yoyo hand up until the string begins to wrap around the center. When you see this (pictures below), remove your off-hand finger from the string while continuing to bring your yoyo-hand up. The yoyo should now come back. The yoyo must be spinning the whole time. 8. Step 5 (only if yo-yo did not bind) If you were unable to bind the yo-yo back, it may be difficult to wind. You must wrap the string around your finger first for one loop and then continue winding. You can now repeat the steps and try again. Pictures taken by: Hunter Drew

  9. Conclusion Now that you are able to throw and then retrieve a yo-yo, you can begin to learn new tricks and have a lot of fun. The more that you practice these steps, the easier it will be. If it is frustrating, do not give up and keep trying. You will get it eventually!
