  1. 6 of the best, yet simplest treats to try at breakfast time Breakfast is easily the most important meal of the day. It is meant to be a pick-you-up and fuel for the ideal start to a week. Many cuisines around the world have special treats that are specifically meant for this meal. So today we scour the globe and bring you 7 of the most iconic breakfast items that you absolutely have to try. 1. Pain au chocolat: France The French have a long tradition of baking. Nearly every arrondissement (neighbourhood) in French cities have bakeries. Special treats are carefully baked in these shops. Some of them include croissants with almond flour and butter, Madeleines, a light and airy cake / cookie creation and of course the iconic Pain au chocolat. The dish is made with butter, sugar, chocolate / cacao powder and is a quintessential breakfast / brunch item.

  2. 2. Shakshuka: Lebanon / Israel If ever a breakfast dish’s origin was hotly contested, the iconic Shakshuka would be it. A staple in the Middle East, Levant and North Africa, it is a dish consisting of eggs poached in a spicy sauce of tomatoes and other vegetables. Eaten with Levantine bread like caboose, this spicy, rich and tangy dish is highly shareable and therefore is a staple at brunches. 3. Frittata: Italy

  3. Eggs continue to rule the roost with this Italian staple. Think of a dish where an omelette meets a quiche and you have a Frittata. An Italian dish that is wholesome, and includes eggs, veggies like potato and spinach, cured meats like breakfast sausage and / or ham and bacon; the roots of this dish can be traced back to the later Roman period, where shepherds and farmers would carry slices of this crustless pie to repast upon. Today it is a cult favourite for Mediterranean breakfasts the world over. 4. Chhole Bhature: India

  4. A country the size of India, boasts of several breakfast favourites, each differing by region. But a universal favourite is Chhole Bhature. Tracing its origins to the North of the country; Punjab in particular, this hearty dish of curried chickpeas and soft, pillowy bread, is iconic. First consumed by farmers before a long day of labour in the fields, this combination is loaded with protein and carbs that are an ideal start for the day. Today however it is a very popular vegetarian / vegan option at breakfast buffets across the subcontinent. 5. Buttermilk Pancakes with Maple Syrup: US / Canada

  5. Pancakes are a fan favourite at buffets because they’re both easy to make and taste amazing. Pancakes have been around for centuries, but teaming them up with real maple syrup is a concept that won popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Whether you are a fast-food breakfast person, or prefer an elaborate breakfast spread, pancakes are the one dish that transcend all boundaries. 6. Cereals / Muesli: UK / Switzerland
