  1. Inquiry- Based Lesson • Parachute Challenge requires participants to perform an investigation of air resistance by building a parachute that takes the longest possible time to reach the ground. • Why do paratroopers yell "Geronimo!" when they jump from the plane? • Because it beats screaming "Mommmyyyy!“

  2. Parachute Challenge The U.S. Navy is developing a new parachute that will bring sky divers to the ground slowly over a short jumping distance from a low-flying plane. The challenge is to determine which factors most affect how fast a parachute comes to the ground and make a recommendation to the navy for how to build a parachute that comes slowly to the ground over a short distance. The design should demonstrate possible answers to the question….

  3. How Is Motion Changed? Work in your teams to examine the materials, discuss possible variables in developing a parachute and generate questions to guide the investigation. Use the KWHL sheet to guide question generation.

  4. Record the questions you will investigate on the Parachute Data Sheet. • Use this page of links as a resource to gather the info you need. • Test your ideas and design a parachute that will fall to the ground more slowly than any other team. • Fill out the table with your observations and questions that may arise. • Each team shows their parachute and how it performs.

  5. Develop a science-based explanation for why the modifications made to the slowest parachute made it descend the most slowly. 8. Each team shares their explanations to the essential question… How is motion changed? Was this lesson anything like the one you remembered from your past?
