  2. What is Actuarial Science? • A method of analyzing industries to predict future behavior • Usually for financial industries – Stocks, bonds, and insurance • Uses a variety of disciplines, mainly Mathematics and Statistics • Primary function is risk assessment

  3. Where Do Actuaries Work? • Insurance industry (either property and casualty or life and health) • Financial institutions • Consulting firms • Government agencies • Accounting firms

  4. Why Be An Actuary? • Starting salaries $50,000 • Excellent benefits • Salary grows steadily as you pass exams • Job security through economic cycles • Dynamic and challenging career • Currently ranked #1 job in USA according to CareerCast.com

  5. How To Become An Actuary Professional certification is done through the Society of Actuaries (SOA) or the Casualty Actuary Society (CAS) SOA has 5 preliminary exams CAS has 6 preliminary exams

  6. SOA vs. CAS • SOACAS • Exam P Exam 1 • Exam FM Exam 2 • Exam MFE Exam 3F • Exam MLC Exam LC, Exam ST • Exam C Exam 4 Exam Scores are on a scale from 1-10. A 6 or higher is considered a passing score. The average pass rate (across all exams) is about 37%.

  7. VEE Requirements • Economics: Microeconomics (ECO 2023) Macroeconomics (ECO 2013) • Business: Business Finance (FIN 3403C) • Applied Statistics: Statistical Methods III (STA 4164) Applied Time Series (STA 4852)
