Philippians 2:6-11 Who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

Philippians 2:6-11 For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

  6. The Atonement ‘We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ has by His suffering and death made an atonement for the whole world so that whosoever will may be saved.’ Salvation Army - Doctrine 6

  7. The Atonement • Means: “to cover” • “For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.” Hebrews 10:4. • “The next day he (John) saw Jesus coming to him and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” John 1:29.

  8. Activity Look at the scriptures on your worksheet to discern the metaphors/images of the Atonement. Ask yourself: ‘What image of Jesus does it give us in His role in the atonement?’ ‘What aspect of the atonement is being focused on with Jesus taking upon Himself our individual sins?’

  9. The Atonement • ‘But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking for. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?’ Mark 10:38. • ‘For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.’ Romans 5:6.

  14. The High Priest • Role is to identify with the people and represent them to God. • Wash five times and have sacrifices offered. • Vicarious prayer, sacrifice, forgiveness. • Ascend to the Holy of Holies. • Blessing of Aaron.

  15. Jesus – the High Priest • Jesus came in flesh and bone. • John 17:19 – Jesus sanctifies himself. • Not a goat, but himself. Takes away the sin of the world. • John 20:17 – Jesus ascends to the “Holy of Holies” (i.e. Heaven). • Peace be unto you.

  19. Closing Activity Come up with explanations for: • Washed in the blood of the Lamb. • Atonement (which involves explaining ‘sin’) • God’s grace – the title of this session.
