Reading Curriculum • Core Instruction: Houghton Mifflin Series • Whole Group Instruction • Story of the Week (read aloud, guided comprehension, buddy reading, independent work) • Guided Reading and Literacy Centers • AR: Students choose books from our Classroom Library and School Library based on their ZPD, or independent reading level. They each have opportunities to take AR quizzes to earn points, which are redeemed for prizes. • Focus Calendar: We focus on each Reading Benchmark for a few weeks at a time. Example: Story Structure • Selection Tests, Vocabulary Tests (per selection), Spelling Tests (Fridays), Cold Reads (per theme)

Written Expression • Whole Group Lesson/Journal Writing Prompt (daily) • Writing for the Reading Selection Tests • What we are looking for: *Focus: Does it stay focused and is it easy to follow? *Organization: beginning, middle, end and transition words *Support: supporting details for the topic *Conventions: Is their writing legible? Did they use correct capitalization and punctuation? • Share with your child about times that you write. (making a list, writing a recipe, a friendly letter, instructions, a story) • Create a writing workshop in your home with writing tools. (Example: dining room table, desk, comfy corner with pillows and clipboards)

Math • enVision Math Series • Lesson Outline: Problem of the Day, Interactive Lesson using Hands-on Math Manipulatives, (example: connecting cubes), Visual Animation, Guided Practice, Independent Practice (HW reinforcement) • Math Facts & Fluency (30 facts in 3 minutes) • Mental Math: based on terminology used in standard math tests; serves as continuous review all year • Math Centers-individually based instruction • Tests (Review in class the day before, Practice Test as Homework the night before, Topic Test in class) • Flash cards and timers • enVision Website: homework available (attached sheet) • Mathfacts in a Flash (computer based) • Learn through understanding, not just rote memory

Social Studies/Science • Scott Foresman Science Series • Text Book/Workbook/Science Units/Science Lab & Demonstrations/Scientific Method • Focus Topics: Plants & Animals * Land, Air & Water * Weather & Seasons * Fossils & Dinosaurs * Matter * Energy * Forces & Motion * Sound * Earth & Space * Technology * • Harcourt Brace Social Studies Series • We teach about map and globe skills, reading a table and graphing, people in history, cultures around the world, and Florida. • Skills are integrated into other core areas. • Character Counts is a universal curriculum for Social Studies in St. Johns County. We expect students to be practicing these skills daily.

  6. Homework • Reinforcement-Extension of learning in the classroom • Check homework for accuracy (initial page) • Check & clean out red folder daily • Reading Logs-20 minutes per night (completed, signed & returned each day) • Spelling Contract: students earn 20 points by Friday & turn in spelling notebooks • Math workbook pages & facts sheet • SCR – Sign, Correct & Return ALL tests below 70%

  7. Report Card • It is a standards based report card. • There are no letter grades. M, P, or I will be used in each subject area other than the areas of behavior and social skills. (see attached rubric) • Automatic recall of Math Facts (M= 90%-100%) • Areas with no M, P, or I are not assessed in that quarter. • Report Card Envelopes (sign and return)

Mrs. Venancio’s Daily Schedule • 8:20 - Pick up students from Media Center • 8:30-9:00 - Announcements/Journal Writing/Morning Work • 9:00-10:30 – Language Arts Block • 9:00-9:45 – Reading & Writing Lesson • 9:45-10:30 – Guided Reading Groups & Centers • 10:30-10:40 – Snack Time • 10:40-11:15 - Resource • Monday: Music, Tuesday: Computer, Wednesday: Media, Thursday: P.E., Friday: Art • 11:15-11:40 - D.E.A.R. Time • 11:40-12:10 - Lunch • 12:10-12:40 - Recess • 12:40-1:00 - Teacher Read Aloud • 1:00-2:00 – Math Lesson (Whole Group & Centers) • 2:00-2:40 – Social Studies/Science Lesson (alternating) • 2:40-2:50 - Pack Up & Clean Up • 2:50 - Dismissal

  9. The surf report will be sent home weekly and will always hold valuable information. I will include important dates, reminders and an update on what we will be covering each week in each edition. This is also an additional source with our weekly spelling words.
