  3. Southern Black-backed gull (Larus dominicanus) Maori name: Karoro The largest of New Zealand gulls with the wingspan of up to 142cm Breeds throughout southern hemispherein costal and alpine environments It is a sedentary rather than pelagic species They live up to 28 years
