About Mrs. B Professionally Speaking • 20 years teaching experience mostly in second and third grade; also preschool, K, 4th, and 6th grades • 10th year being an Otter at OES • BS ED Elementary Ed and Early Childhood – UND, Grand Forks, ND • MS – Community Counseling – Drake Univ, Des Moines, IA • Administrative Certificate – SPU, Seattle, WA

  3. What Else About Mrs. B? • Worked in the corporate world • McGraw-Hill Publishing Co. NW District Mgr • LEGO Systems – teacher trainer NW region • Personally • Live in Issaquah with my husband Jerry who is a small animal vet. • We have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel – Earl and a tabby cat – Harley • I love to read – belong to 2 book groups; Small Group team organizer at my church; garden; travel; basketball – boohoo Sonics, go Cougs!

  4. What’s Second Grade About? • Self-management of Behavior- learning responsibility Dr. Jim Fay’s “Love and Logic” Active responsibility = increased self-esteem 2. Building stamina around focus – we’re practicing muscle memory Classroom system is color coded: green = terrific, you’re on task yellow = oops teacher warning, e.g. shouting out answers, talking to neighbors during instruction, making offensive noises, to name a few orange = continued the behavior; lose a recess red = still continued inappropriate behavior; lose recess and write a “Fix It” plan of action

  5. More on Second Grade…. • Grade Level Expectations pamphlet • Reading for accuracy, fluency, and comprehension; minimum of 90 mins/week- what if don’t read? (it takes 1000 hours of practice to move to next level) • Math basic facts - fluency + and – up to 20; mental, oral testing weekly the first practice sheet is coming home this Friday; application of problem solving, time, $ and linear measurement. Encourage you purchase an analog watch for your child and discuss/review value and description of coins to $1.00. • Writing= story starters; creating own with clear beginning, middle and end. African animal report in spring. • Word wall words and spelling words – marked wrong if letters are made incorrectly, backwards, or can’t be read. First set of words coming in Oct. • Scientific process and inquiry – life cycle, fossils, butterfly cycle, solids, liquids, and gases • Social studies – Community; we’ll live it daily. Snoqualmie Valley history and Kenya.

  6. Success for Students • Be ON time and get good night’s sleep. • Have a hearty breakfast to be ready to learn. Also send a healthy snack. • Complete homework and return in folder. • 4. Follow school/classroom guidelines. Focus on being self-manager

  7. “Homework” • Student folders • Left side – “Return to School” • Right side – “Keep at home” • Watch for daily work that comes home in the “return to school” pocket to be completed and returned the next day. • 2.10 minutes per year in school each night; second grade = ~ 20 minutes • 3. Homework folder due each Friday;please initial reading log, and sign the math facts sheet. • (See attached homework form – “X” the boxes for reading, word wall practice, and math facts practice; continue to maintain reading log. )

More on “Homework” • A reading to self minimum of60 - 90 minutes per week “What you focus on you develop” • Each day = student writes mins. read and book name on log • Friday = receive new reading log and rest of week’s homework, e.g. Word Wall Words, basic math facts • Beginning Monday, 9/19 – Basic Math Facts; practice orally return signed when can do 20 problems in one minute. • First week in October – word wall words plus reading log, and math facts, • Friday = turn in homework folder with reading log, practice of facts, practice of Word Wall Words; all signed by parent. • If forgotten = lose 2 mins. recess; if forgotten next day lose 4 mins. • Please do not reward your child for forgetting his homework by bringing it to school for him or her.

Absences • Notify the school or Mrs. B by phone or email • Two days to complete for each day absent • I prefer not to send work home when they’re sick; I will teach them when they return and may send some home at night to complete; • Best that they read as their homework • Family trip = required to keep a journal of experience to share upon return; complete the form that goes to Mr. Jester for approval • Early dismissal – avoid if possible; but if need arises, I try to get students ready by last p.m. recess so intercom doesn’t disrupt the other students’ learning

What’s Standards Based? **Easy as 1,2,3, and 4** “4” = exceeds, exceptional; working next grade “3” = meets grade level expectations “2” = meets some expectations; still needs assistance; this is typical of the first trimester “1” = below grade level; much assistance When answers are in purple pen, that means they made a correction.

  11. More on Standards • Second grade is a foundational year • Third grade is the first year for students to take the MSP in reading and math. • MSP = measures the standards = • Measurement of Student Progress

  12. Conferences and Events • All students “Fall” conference in Nov. • 18, 21, & 22 • March 29th second grade musical • Some students “Spring” conferences • **Of course- individual may be called!

  13. Additional Cultural Elements • Daily snack – after a.m. recess ; nutritional; • V.I.P. = Mrs. B’s right hand person; V.I.P. lunch on Mon. with Mrs. B • Parties – yes, we party hearty! • Harvest – Oct. 31 favorite book character • Winter/Holidays Around the World – mid Dec. • Valentine’s – Feb. 14 • End of year – ~ mid June • Birthdays – if you wish to send a food treat, it is served at lunch. • Reading Party – 35,000 minutes of outside reading by 3/1

  16. Perception and Reality • I promise…….. • Occasionally, I may be dubious about what your child tells me happened at home. Be grateful • Sometimes there is a discrepancy between the perception of what your child believes happened at school and the reality of what actually happened– If such is the case, PLEASE CALL 831.8323 – Mrs. B • Please give me the same courtesy and call me to check it out.
