What are the origins of Islam? • Islam means acceptance, surrender, submission, or commitment. • Muslim means committing yourself to Allah (Muslim God) and enjoying it. • Like many religions, someone on earth, in this case Muhammad, was chosen by the deity, Allah, to be his messenger and spread his word. • Islam is said to have started when Muhammad, the messenger, migrated from Mecca to Medina. This journey is called the Hijra. • Muhammad’s Hijra started on September 24, 622, which is the beginning of the Muslim calendar. Beth Davies-Stofka

  4. What are the major tenets of Islamic belief? • The major tenets in Islam are the 5 pillars. • The first pillar, Iman (faith), says to only believe in Allah and Muhammad. And there’s no one else worthy of worship. • The second pillar, Salah (prayer), is done in prayer five times a day no matter what you’re doing, nothing is more important than Allah and Muhammad. • The third pillar, Zakah, is to help those in need and don’t be materialized. • The fourth pillar, Sawm (fasting), is for sacrificing yourself by not eating from sunrise to sundown for one month. • The fifth pillar, Hajj (pilgrimage), is going to Mecca at least once in your life.   6. What is expected of a practicing Muslim? • Muslims are expected of the following things to do every so often… • Read the Quran • Go to mosque • Follow the five pillars of Islam • Praying • Help himself, his family, his friends, and his community

What is the role of Islam in Afghan politics and in Afghan life? • Muslim politics come from interpretations of the Quran. • In Muslim governed countries, women cannot drive, have a job, vote, be alone in the streets, etc. • Women are only useful for reproduction, cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the kids. • If any woman is violates any rules they will be beaten. • If a man does something illegal they will get slapped in the wrist.
