  3. Some of Jesus’ Claims: • The [Samaritan] woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ); when he comes, he will show us all things.” Jesus said to her, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.” John 4:25-26

  6. Some of Jesus’ Claims: • Jesus claimed the ability to forgive sins (Mark 2:5–7), which the Bible teaches was something that God alone could do (Isaiah 43:25).

  7. Foretelling of the Messiah: • The Old Testament contains over 300 references to the Messiah that were fulfilled in Jesus. • We have time to look at only a few.

  8. The idea of a Messiah is one that is found throughout the Old Testament - Hebrew Bible. • Messiah means “The anointed” (Messiah is a Hebrew word) • In Greek Messiah is translated “Christ” • For thousands of years the Jews looked forward to the coming of the Messiah.

  9. Old Testament - Hebrew BibleTells of the coming of the Messiah (called prophecy). • The LORD your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst, from your brethren. Deuteronomy 18:15 - 1406 B.C. • Next page shows how Jesus and Moses are alike.

  10. How Jesus and Moses Are Alike • Leader, a prophet, a lawgiver, a deliverer, a teacher, a priest, a mediator, a human and one of God’s chosen people (a Jew), intermediary between God and man, speaking the words of God, performed many miracles, early years in Egypt. As infants, lives were threatened by evil kings, both were supernaturally protected from harm and more.

  11. Foretelling of the Messiah’s Birth Place • He will be born in a small city called Bethlehem. Micah 5:2 - 722 B.C. Micah 5:22 “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,    though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me    one who will be ruler over Israel, hose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”

  12. The Messiah will come while the Temple of Jerusalem is open and in use. • Malachi 3:1; Psalm 118:26; Daniel 9:26; Zechariah 11:13 (420 BC, 444 B.C, 604 B.C, 520 B.C.) • Temple of Jerusalem was destroyed in 70 A.D. • Opened in 164 B.C • 235 Years open and in use

  13. He will be the Son of God. • Psalm 2:7 (written around 1000 B.C.) • I will proclaim the Lord’s decree: He said to me, “You are my son  today I have become your father.

  14. The Gentiles will believe in Him, while most of His own people (the Jews) will reject him. • Isaiah 8:14; 28:16; 49:6; 60:3 • 742 B.C. • Isaiah 49:6bI will also make you a light for the Gentiles,  that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.

  15. He will be beaten and spit upon. • Isaiah 50:6 • 742 B.C. • I offered my back to those who beat me,    my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard;I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting.

  16. He will be “numbered with the transgressors.” • Meaning that he would be counted in with criminals. • Isaiah 53:12 (written in 742 B.C.) • At the Cross he was with two criminals. • Isaiah 53:12Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

  17. Yet, He will be buried with the rich. • Meaning they planned His grave to be with the wicked, but he was buried in a rich man’s tomb. • Isaiah 53:9 742 B.C. • Jesus’ grave was from the rich man, Joseph of Arimathea. • Isaiah 53:9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked,    and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence,  nor was any deceit in his mouth

  18. After death he will see life.He will not decay. • Raised from the dead - resurrected. • Isaiah 53:11 742 B.C. • Psalm 16:10 1018 B.C.because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful (holy) one see decay. • 100s of Roman soldiers could not keep Jesus in the grave.

  19. He will suffer for us. • “Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” “For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.”Isaiah 53:4-6,17 742 B.C

  20. The foretelling of the Messiah is so clear and detailed, as to point to Jesus, that many non-believers claimed Christians somehow changed the Old Testament -Hebrew Bible, especially Isaiah

  21. Found in 1947, the Dead Sea Scrolls proved that the Old Testament - Hebrew Biblewas written before Jesus’ birth. • Scrolls written from 408 BC to 318 BC

  22. Dead Sea ScrollsThe single most important manuscript find in history • Placed into caves around 408 BC to 318 BC for safekeeping, about 40% are Bible Scrolls. • Jews hid them away in caves for fear of the Jewish-Roman Wars - Revolts.

  23. To date the Dead Sea Scrolls Hundreds of coins were found with the scrolls, dated from 223 to 4BC Antiochus 223 – 129 BC John Hyrcanus 134 – 104 BC Alexander Jannaeus 103 – 76 BC Aristobulus II 76 – 63 BC Mattathias Antigonus 40 – 37 BC Herod the Great 37-4 BC

  24. Dead Sea Scrolls • Dead Sea Scrolls were first discovered in a cave by a shepherd in 1947. • Public Display

  25. Dead Sea Scrolls - Isaiah Scroll • Only one Scroll was almost completely intact: • The Isaiah Scroll from 125 BC

  26. Dead Sea Scroll Great Isaiah Scroll • Dead Sea Scrolls’ Isaiah Scroll shows that the foretelling of the Messiah was made well before the birth of Jesus. Jesus is the only person that completed - fulfilled - these promises. Thus Jesus is the Messiah.

  27. Other Fulfilled Prophecy • Rebirth of Israel Ezekiel 37:21 • Israel would not vanish like the other tribes in the Holy Land. Daniel 10 • Those that bless the Jews will be blessed, those the curse the Jews would be cursed. Genesis 12 • History of Nations. • Many more...

  28. God Keeps His Promises • Thus, we can trust Him to keep his future promises.

  29. Fulfilled prophesy is one of the many proofs we have that the Bible is the Word of God. • Others: • Resurrected Jesus: Over 500 people at one time saw Jesus after His resurrection. Rapid growth of the Church. • Reliability of OT and NT documents. • When the Bible writes about science, it is correct. • Miracles of Jesus • The faith of Jesus’ followers, their changed lives • and more
