  2. Importance of ESPON for EU Policy making Greater role of European territorial development and territorial cohesion →demand for new knowledge More focus on regional aspect on European level → need for research on regional trends & processes Territorial Cohesion needs scientific support

  3. Importance of ESPON for National Policy making • Provides information on how to include EU context in national territorial thinking, e.g.: • Polycentrism, • Enlargement, • Urban-rural, • Demography trends, etc.

  4. Utilising ESPON in Hungary • Background analyses, input in different fields: • Polycentric development • Defining growth poles • Defining territorial aspects of Lisbon & Gothenburg • National development approaches • Datas for Hungary’s National Concept of Regional Development

Utilising ESPON in the National Concept for Regional Development • NCRD utilised mainly thematic projects • Territorial impacts of different policies • Examples: • Project 1.1.1 'Polycentrism' • Project 1.1.3 'Enlargement & Polycentrism' • Project 1.1.2 'Urban-rural' • Project 1.1.4 'Demographic trends' • Project 1.2.1 'Transport trends' • Project 1.3.1 'Natural hazards' • Project 1.3.2 'Natural heritage' • Project 1.3.3 'Cultural heritage' • Project 2. 'Policy Impact Projects”

  6. ESPON II. • More operational results for policy makers • Need for wider,regionalised data • Better focused than ESPON I. • Providing knowledge for EU policies

Issues to consider- Hungary’s comments on ESPON II: • Scientific control as separate issue • Setting up team for scientific platform • Further links with other EU programs apart from Interact II and Urbact II • Importance of networking • Further thematic orientations: e.g.:tourism, policentricity

  8. Development of Spatial Science(integrated spatial science)I. • Interdisciplinary knowledge is needed (competitiveness, sustainable development, governance, horizontal issues, etc.) • Cooperation of experts in different fields (planners, geographers, economists etc.)

Further issues for work: • polycentric development • rural-urban partnership • territorial impacts of European and national policies • wider scope of ‘Europe in the world • new spatial analysis instruments and tools • Deepen and review territorial typologies

Importance of dialogue between Science and Policy • Science delivers insights and evidence →improve the quality of policies • Quality of research is related to researchers’ understanding of policy making • Dialogue is needed: Workshops, conferences • Wide range of academic disciplines • Importance of applied research

User friendly spatial science • In terms of communicating the results • Inputs from policy makers for generating applied research • Common language between science & policy • Capacity to respond ac hoc requests →greater flexibility of program structure • Importance of networking (broadening the trans-nationality of ECPs)
